John Andiwo Mwai, also known as Andiwo Mpesa, is a prominent businessman and political figure in Kenya.
He has gained attention due to his close association with the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General, Francis Atwoli, who refers to him as his brother-in-law and other prominent political figures in the country.
Atwoli frequently shares moments with Mpesa on social media, often using his affectionate nickname.
On his X (formerly Twitter) account, Atwoli regularly posts images and mentions having meals or meetings with Mpesa, consistently describing him as his “brother-in-law.”
The trade unionist has in the past shared photos capturing them having breakfast, lunch, or dinner in luxurious locations, including Atwoli’s residences such as the Bofa Ocean View Home in Kilifi County, his Kwhisero Home in Kakamega County, and Itimad Home in Kajiado County.
Occasionally, Mwai hosts Atwoli at his home and his restaurant in Nairobi.
Mpesa is a regular attendee at Atwoli’s social gatherings. In past events organized by the COTU Secretary General and shared on social media, Mpesa has been attending among other dignitaries.
Political Involvement
Beyond his business ventures, Mpesa has been actively involved in politics, particularly in the Bondo constituency in Siaya County.
He has vied unsuccessfully for the Bondo Parliamentary seat twice, losing to the current Member of Parliament, Gideon Ochanda.

He first contested the seat in the 2017 elections but was defeated. Despite this setback, he remained an influential political figure, leveraging his business acumen and community connections to build support. In 2022, he made another attempt but was again defeated by Ochanda.
Mpesa is a close ally of Siaya Senator James Orengo and has received notable endorsements from influential political figures, including ODM leader Raila Odinga to vie for the Bondo Parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Andiwo Mwai recently married Elsie Akinyi in August 2024. The couple tied the knot in a colorful traditional wedding ceremony attended by several prominent politicians, including Siaya Governor James Orengo.
