Private hire driver Leonard Patrick Kinyua has shared how SHA cover helped him access treatment after a road crash that left both his legs injured.
Kinyua said he was working as a private hire driver when the accident occurred. He recalled that he had just woken up and was traveling when he saw another vehicle approaching him.
According to Patrick Kinyua, the other vehicle suddenly lost control and came towards his car. Within seconds, the two vehicles collided, leaving him injured.
“We closed the safari and set off. I had just woken up, and I saw another car coming towards me. The car lost control. In one second, the cars collided,” he narrated.
Kinyua said he immediately felt that something was wrong with his legs following the impact. His wife was also injured in the crash.
They were taken to a nearby Mission Hospital, where doctors conducted an X-ray to assess their injuries.
The examination showed that Patrick Kinyua had injuries to both legs, with both ankles affected. He said the injuries were serious enough to require further medical treatment, including surgery.
“My left ankle was sprained, and my right ankle was sprained. I needed surgery. That’s when the pain started,” he recalled.

How SHA Cover Helped Patrick Kinyua Pay KSh400,000 Surgery Bill
After the accident, Leonard Patrick Kinyua said he needed money for surgery, medication and food.
Doctors initially estimated that he would require about KSh300,000 for the operation.
Kinyua said he was the breadwinner and was worried about how he would support his children while he was in pain and unable to work.
“I needed money for an operation, medication, and food. The doctor estimated I would need KSh 300,000. I was the breadwinner. I was in pain. I didn’t know what to do with my children.”
He said he went for surgery without having enough money to cover the treatment. He was admitted to hospital, and the operation proceeded.

Kinyua said he eventually paid KSh148,000 out of a KSh400,000 hospital bill, while also having financial responsibilities for his children.
He said returning to work later allowed him to continue supporting his children as they recovered.
SHA Cover Helps Kinyua Get Back on His Feet
Kinyua said the cover helped him access treatment and eventually return to work, enabling him to continue supporting his children.
He urged private hire drivers and other workers to have mechanisms in place to help them manage medical costs when emergencies arise.
He said the cover he used is accepted in hospitals, allowing members to access care when they need it.
