Hafidh Ameir Hassan was a retired Tanzanian agricultural officer and academic. He married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978, when she was 18.
The couple had four children: three sons and one daughter; their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, later entered politics and now served in the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
Hafidh Ameir built his career in agriculture and public service and was previously referred to as an agriculturalist, an agricultural academic, and an agriculture officer before retiring from government service.
He maintained a private life and rarely appeared in major political events or gave public interviews.

Samia Suluhu Hassan became Tanzania’s president on March 17, 2021, following the death of President John Magufuli.
Her election led to Hafidh Ameir’s appointment as her first First Gentleman; he never held a position in the executive government, and his main public role was accompanying the president to official functions and helping with her public duties.
During Samia’s presidency, Hafidh Ameir stayed largely out of the political spotlight; his role was mainly ceremonial and supportive, as he was the husband of Tanzania’s first female president.
Death in 2026
Hafidh Ameir died on Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment for a heart-related illness.

Tanzania’s Deputy President Deogratius Ndejembi announced his death, saying Ameir died at about 8 a.m. while undergoing treatment.
His death came more than five years after he became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when Samia assumed the presidency in March 2021.
Ameir’s public life was largely defined by his agricultural career, his long marriage to Samia Suluhu Hassan, and his role in supporting her during her presidency.
