The Ministry of Education in Kenya is taking a firm stance against age cheating in school games, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 International Schools Federation (ISF) World Schools Championship.

Scheduled to be hosted at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi from May 9th to 14th, 2024, this event has prompted the Ministry to implement stringent measures to ensure fair play and uphold the integrity of the competition.

To identify the top performers who will represent Kenya at the ISF World Schools Championship, the Ministry has organized team selection trials at Nakuru High School on March 27th and 28th, 2024.

Invitations have been extended to the Regional Champions in cross country across various categories, including U-12 (boys and girls), U-15 (boys and girls), and U-18 (boys and girls), emphasizing the importance of talent identification and selection based on merit.

Ministry of Education’s efforts to curb the issue of age cheating

In an effort to maintain transparency and fairness, the Ministry has made it mandatory for all participants to provide their birth certificates for age verification.

This crucial requirement aims to confirm the eligibility of athletes and prevent any instances of age cheating, ensuring that only genuine talents compete in the championship.

By cracking down on age cheating and enforcing strict selection criteria, the Ministry of Education is not only safeguarding the credibility of school games but also promoting the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and fair competition.

These measures serve to instill a culture of honesty and respect among young athletes, setting a positive example for the sporting community.

This team-based competition emphasizes collective effort and sportsmanship among students representing their schools, fostering a strong sense of identification with their educational institutions.

Open to ISF member schools and recognized School Sports Entities, the championship features age-specific categories and a balanced program that combines sports competitions with educational content to enhance students’ personal development through cultural, artistic, and sporting activities within the school environment.

For Kenya, hosting this event presents a chance to demonstrate the nation’s athletic prowess and nurture promising talents on a global stage, fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among participants.

The Contentious issue of age cheating

Age cheating has been a persistent issue in Kenyan school games, posing a threat to the authenticity of competitions and hindering the development of genuine talent.

By addressing this challenge through measures like birth certificate verification, the Ministry of Education is taking proactive steps to combat age cheating and uphold the principles of fairness and honesty in sports.
