Football’s biggest prize will be on the line when two football powerhouses, Spain and Argentina, face off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on Sunday, July 19.

The 10 PM EAT kickoff,  Spain vs Argentina will mark the first-ever men’s World Cup final between two reigning continental champions.

The showdown pits the champions of Europe against the reigning world champions from South America in what promises to be one of the most compelling World Cup finals in recent history.

It is also a meeting of two generations. At 39, Lionel Messi is expected to make what is widely believed to be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage, while Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, just 19, has emerged as one of the brightest young stars in world football and the player many see as the heir to Messi’s legacy at Barcelona.

Spain are chasing only their second World Cup title, having last lifted the trophy in South Africa in 2010 when they defeated the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time, while Argentina are seeking to defend the crown they won in Qatar in 2022 and claim a fourth World Cup title.

Argentina, who successfully defended their Copa America title in 2024, aim to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups.

Spain vs Argentina World Cup Final Preview

Spain’s Journey to the Final

Spain’s World Cup campaign began with a surprise when tournament debutants Cape Verde held them to a goalless draw.

Luis de la Fuente’s side quickly recovered, dismantling Saudi Arabia 4-0, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice while Lamine Yamal continued to impress.

A narrow 1-0 victory over Uruguay ensured Spain topped Group H before they comfortably defeated Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32.

The knockout rounds became increasingly demanding.

Substitute Mikel Merino’s dramatic stoppage-time winner eliminated Portugal before Spain produced one of the tournament’s standout performances to beat Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

Their biggest statement came in the semi-finals against pre-tournament favourites France.

Rodri dominated midfield as Spain completely controlled the match, frustrating the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele before goals from Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro sealed a deserved 2-0 victory.

Spain, ranked 2nd in the FIFA rankings, arrive at the final with arguably the tournament’s strongest defence, having conceded just one goal in seven matches while keeping six clean sheets.

Their balance between possession football and defensive discipline has made them one of the most complete teams in the competition.

Argentina’s Road to the Final

Unlike Spain’s composed march to the final, Argentina’s campaign has been built on resilience.

Lionel Scaloni’s men progressed smoothly through the group stage but have repeatedly shown their ability to recover from adversity during the knockout rounds.

They needed extra time to eliminate Cape Verde before producing a stunning comeback from 2-0 down against Egypt.

Argentina then overcame Switzerland in the quarter-finals after Breel Embolo’s red card shifted momentum in their favour.

The defending champions again found themselves trailing in the semi-finals against England until Lionel Messi inspired another remarkable turnaround.

Messi’s creativity sparked late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez as Argentina secured a dramatic 2-1 victory to reach another World Cup final.

Argentina, ranked 1st in the FIFA rankings head into Sunday’s match as the tournament’s most prolific attacking side, having scored 12 goals in their last five matches.

Current Form

Spain

Spain, the Euro 2024 winners, have won each of their last five matches without dropping a point.

Their recent victories include wins over France (2-0), Belgium (2-1), Portugal (1-0), Austria (3-0) and Uruguay (1-0).

Across those five games, Spain have scored nine goals while conceding only one.

Argentina

Argentina have also won all five of their recent matches.

They defeated England 2-1 in the semi-finals after earlier victories over Switzerland (3-1), Egypt (3-2) and Cape Verde (3-2).

Scaloni’s side have scored 12 goals while conceding five, underlining their attacking threat heading into the final.

Head-to-Head Record

History slightly favours Spain heading into Sunday’s showdown, although the two nations have never met in a FIFA World Cup.

The most recent meeting came in an international friendly on March 27, 2018, when Spain thrashed Argentina 6-1.

Before that, Argentina defeated Spain 4-1 in a friendly in September 2010. Spain also claimed 2-1 victories in friendlies played in November 2009 and October 2006.

Across the last four recorded meetings, Spain have won three matches while Argentina have won one, scoring 11 goals compared to Argentina’s seven.

However, previous friendly results are unlikely to matter when the biggest trophy in football is at stake.

Expected Lineups

Spain

Unai Simon; Pedro Porro, Pau Cubarsi, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella; Rodri, Fabian Ruiz; Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Alex Baena; Mikel Oyarzabal.

Luis de la Fuente has a fully fit squad and is expected to retain the side that comfortably beat France in the semi-finals.

Argentina

Emiliano Martinez; Gonzalo Montiel, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martinez, Nicolas Tagliafico; Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister; Lionel Messi, Julian Alvarez.

Lionel Scaloni also has a full squad available.

His biggest tactical decision is likely to be in attack, where Julian Alvarez is expected to start ahead of Lautaro Martinez because of his pressing ability, which could be crucial against Spain’s possession-based style.

Tactical Analysis

Sunday’s final will pit two teams with contrasting styles against each other. Spain have built their success on control.

Rodri dictates the tempo in midfield, Fabian Ruiz provides balance, while Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal constantly create overloads in attacking areas.

Argentina, meanwhile, are more direct and unpredictable.

Scaloni’s side are comfortable absorbing pressure before launching rapid counter-attacks led by Messi, Alvarez and the energetic midfield trio of Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Rodrigo De Paul.

Their ability to recover from losing positions has become a defining feature of their campaign.

Key Battles

Lionel Messi vs Rodri

The duel between Messi and Rodri could determine the outcome.

If Rodri succeeds in limiting Messi’s influence between the lines, Spain will significantly reduce Argentina’s creativity.

Lamine Yamal vs Nicolas Tagliafico

Yamal has been one of the breakout stars of the tournament.

His pace, dribbling and decision-making will test Tagliafico throughout the evening.

Mikel Oyarzabal vs Cristian Romero

Spain’s leading striker has enjoyed an outstanding tournament.

Romero will need to prevent Oyarzabal from finding space inside the penalty area if Argentina are to contain Spain’s attack.

Prediction

Everything points towards a closely contested final.

Spain possess the tournament’s best defence and arguably the most balanced squad, while Argentina have repeatedly shown remarkable resilience and attacking quality.

Much will depend on whether Spain can control possession through Rodri and whether Argentina can create enough opportunities for Messi to make the difference.

If Spain dominate midfield, they could lift their second World Cup trophy.

If Argentina survive the early pressure, Messi may yet deliver one final unforgettable performance.
