Kenya Met Warns Of Heavy Rains In Select Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather forecast for the period between May 25th to May 29th, 2024, warning select regions in Kenya to prepare for moderate to heavy rains

The forecast predicts rainfall, showers, and thunderstorms in various regions across Kenya, with some areas experiencing sunny intervals and partly cloudy conditions.

According to the weatherman, the regions in the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, parts of the Northwest, and the Coast are set to see a continuation of rainfall.

“Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West and East of the Rift valley, Nairobi and the Rift Valley,” noted Kenya Met.

Additionally, strong southerly and south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots are expected in the Eastern half of the country and the Northwestern region.

Here is a detailed breakdown of each region’s forecast.

Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley

Areas within these regions which include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo and Uasin Gishu counties are advised to expect rains in the mornings throughout the five-day period.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected over several places on Saturday and Sunday, with fewer showers over the following days.

Nighttime will see showers over several places on Saturday, with fewer showers in the following days.

Temperatures in this region are expected to range from a maximum of 30°C to a minimum of 11°C throughout the period.

Kenya Met Issues Forecast for Northwestern Region

The Northwestern region, comprising Turkana and Samburu Counties, will experience rains over a few places on Saturday morning, with sunny intervals for the rest of the period.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with sunny intervals for the rest of the period.

Nighttime will see showers over a few places on Saturday and Tuesday, with partly cloudy conditions the rest of the time.

Temperatures in this region are expected to range from a maximum of 36°C to a minimum of 15°C throughout the period.

Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County)

The counties in these regions include Nairobi, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nyandarua.

These areas will start the mornings with cloudy conditions and a chance of light rains breaking into sunny intervals.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected over several places on Saturday afternoon, with fewer showers over the following days.

At night, the counties will experience showers over several places on Saturday, with fewer showers in the following days.

Temperatures in this region are expected to range from a maximum of 29°C to a minimum of 9°C throughout the period.

Northeastern (Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo Counties)

The Northeastern region, comprising Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo Counties, will experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night throughout the five-day period.

Temperatures in this region are expected to range from a maximum of 37°C to a minimum of 19°C throughout the period.

Southeastern Lowlands (Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties)

The Southeastern Lowlands, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties, will start Saturday morning with cloudy conditions and light rains breaking into sunny intervals, followed by sunny intervals for the rest of the period.

Temperatures in this region are expected to range from a maximum of 35°C to a minimum of 13°C throughout the period.

Weather in The Coastal Regions

The Coastal region, comprising of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale Counties, will experience showers over a few places on Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and afternoons, with sunny intervals the rest of the time.

Nighttime will see partly cloudy conditions throughout the period.

Temperatures in this region are expected to range from a maximum of 33°C to a minimum of 23°C throughout the period.
