Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rainfall & Isolated Storms

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has shared a weather outlook for the period between 19th and 23rd December 2024.

In the forecast published on December 12, Director of Meteorological Services David Gikungu said rain is expected in Western Kenya, Central Highlands, Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, Central & South Rift Valley, Southeastern Lowlands, and the Coast.

Kenya Met also warned that some areas are likely to receive heavy and isolated storms within this period.

“Isolated storms with periods of heavy rainfall are likely in some areas as illustrated in the rainfall forecast maps,” the weatherman said.

The Weatherman predicts strong South Eeastern winds of more than 25 knots (12.5m/s) forecasted in Turkana & Marsabit.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley will experience rains over a few places in the mornings with showers and thunderstorm in the afternoon and nights.

This includes Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

The minimum temperature will be 09°C but this will rise up to 30°C.

Turkana & Samburu Weather Forecast

North-western region, which includes Turkana and Samburu Counties, will experience sunny intervals in the morning and afternoons.

The nights will be partly cloudy with chances of showers on December 21.

According to Kenya Met, the temperature will range between 09°C and 37°C.

Nairobi & its Environs

Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka will experience rain over few places in the mornings.

Similarly, there will be showers over few places in the afternoons with thunderstorms over few places on December 19.

The night will be partly cloudy on December 19 with showers over few places for the remaining days.

The temperature will range between 07°C and 29°C.

North-eastern

Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo Counties will experience sunny intervals in the morning for the first two days with rains over a few places for the other days.

There will be showers in a few places in the afternoons except for December 22 when there will be sunny intervals.

The nights will be partly cloudy with chances of showers on December 21.

Minimum temperature will be 17°C but this will rise up to 37°C.

South-eastern lowlands

These regions will experience rain in a few places in the mornings with showers in a few places in the afternoon and at night.

Kenya Met has warned of thunderstorms over few places on the afternoon of December 19.

Temperature will range between 13°C and 32°C.

Counties in this region include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties as well as inland parts of Tana River County.

Coast

The Weatherman has forecasted rains over a few places in the mornings, showers over few places in the afternoons and a chance of showers over few places during the nights.

The temperature will range between 23°C and 33°C.

Counties in this region include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as coastal parts of Tana River County.
