A middle-aged man of Kenyan descent residing in the United States of America (US) has been arrested over the death of a Kenyan woman identified as Tracy Nyariki, whose body was found inside his vehicle on Friday, December 22, 2024, night.
According to a statement from New Castle County Police Department, 31-year-old Nyariki, who was residing in Delaware, went missing in Bear in New Castle County.
Nyariki’s employer filed a report with the Police after she failed to report to work for several days. Officers swung into action and went to her New Castle County apartment on the night of December 20.
The officers didn’t find Nyariki inside her apartment, according to police.
Instead, they “uncovered several suspicious circumstances that raised concerns about her safety and well-being”. Authorities did not, however, specify what the suspicious circumstances were.
After officers failed to locate or get into contact with Nyariki, they issued a Gold Alert seeking help in finding the middle-aged woman.
In the US, the “Gold Alert Program” refers to the procedures used to aid in the identification and location of a missing person.
According to US law, the initial decision to issue a local Gold Alert is at the discretion of the investigating law-enforcement agency. The Alerts may be local, regional, or statewide.

Gold Alerts in Delaware are sent out for “a missing person who is a senior citizen, a suicidal person, or a person with a disability,” according to the city of Wilmington.
Kenyan man arrested over murder of Tracy Nyariki
By December 21, the main suspect, identified as 32-year-old Nobert Matara of Kenyan descent, was a potential person of interest in the investigation.
Having been a person of interest, New Castle County detectives asked the Aberdeen Police Department in Maryland for help in finding Matara, his car and Nyariki.
“We uncovered several suspicious circumstances that raised concerns about her safety and well-being,” police said.
Part of the statement adds, “On Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 5:00 PM, officers from the Aberdeen Police Department were asked by the New Castle County Police Department in Delaware to assist in locating a missing person and a potential male homicidal person.”

Matara was found inside his vehicle that day with the dismembered remains in Aberdeen and was arrested.
Before announcing Matara’s arrest, New Castle County police issued a news release on December 22, saying the Gold Alert for Nyariki was canceled and that she was found.
Matara is set to be extradited from Maryland to Delaware for an arraignment where he set to be charged with first-degree murder.
Police further said that additional charges may be filed against him as evidence continues to be collected in this ongoing investigation.
No information, however, about how Nyariki and Matara knew each other was released, though the two are believed to be acquaintances.
