At least 600 people died in Morocco Friday night when a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Marrakesh, causing buildings to collapse.
According to state TV, Al Aoula, rescue teams in Morocco had difficult time accessing the scene to save lives after the earthquake destroyed roads.
The BBC reported that at least 632 people were confirmed dead by Saturday, September 9, with the death toll expected to rise.
Government officials stated that the deaths happened in Marrakesh and other areas to the south.
Further, the Ministry stated that preliminary reports showed that the earthquake that hit 22:11 GMT on Friday left at least 329 people injured.
Videos widely shared on social media showed buildings shaking and rubble-strewn streets.
Further, the US Geological Survey showed that it was the strongest quake to hit that part of the North African nation in 120 years.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is among world leaders who have already sent their condolences over the loss of lives in Morocco following the tragedy.
“Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco.
Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time,” stated Modi on his X account.

US, UN Condole with Morocco
The US Embassy in Rabat also sent its condolences to the families whose loved ones died.
“An earthquake has struck 12 km from Imintanoute, Morocco, approximately 60 miles southwest of Marrakech, and has been felt throughout Morocco.
Please exercise caution for the next 24 hours in case of additional earthquakes or aftershocks. A tsunami warning will also be in effect for coastal areas.
We extend our condolences to those affected by the earthquake. We are closely monitoring the situation. The Embassy issued an alert advising US citizens to exercise caution,” the statement read.
The US government further asked its citizens to be vigilant. “Adhere to police instructions regarding road closures or traffic disruptions.”
A statement from the United Nations said the Secretary-General Antionio Guterres was profoundly saddened to learn of the earthquake that hit Morocco which claimed many lives.
“The Secretary-General expresses his solidarity with the government and people of Morocco in these difficult times. He addresses his most sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.
The United Nations is ready to assist the government of Morocco in its efforts to assist the impacted population,” stated Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General.

EU shows solidarity
On its part, the European Union Commission said it is standing with Morocco and monitoring the situation.
“We stand by the people of Morocco at this difficult time following the deadly earthquake. Our Emergency Response Coordination Centre is closely monitoring the situation, ready to provide assistance if requested. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” the statement read.
