The United States’ rescue mission on April 5, 2026, has raised conflicting concerns over the reports delivered from Iran and the US.
US President Donald Trump announced the successful recovery of a high-ranking US Air Force officer from Iranian territory, concluding a high-stakes mission he described as “one of the most daring search and rescue operations in U.S. History”.
“The fact that we were able to pull off both of these operations, without a SINGLE American killed, or even wounded, just proves once again, that we have achieved overwhelming Air Dominance and Superiority over the Iranian skies,” Donald Trump stated.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, a US official said that US troops were surrounding and closing in on the location of the airman, while evading Iranian troops for two days.
The officials also stated that during the rescue, Iranian authorities issued a public plea for local civilians to assist in the search, offering a reward equivalent to $60,000 for the American officer’s capture.
Conflicting Reports between the US and Iran
While the White House boasted of its power and air dominance, the Pentagon confirmed that a US A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog), dispatched to support the search, was struck by Iranian fire and crashed in Kuwaiti airspace, as well as facilities in Bahrain and the UAE.
Iran’s attack on the airspace followed the 48-hour ultimatum to the Iranians issued by Trump before the rescue mission.
In addition, two US military helicopters were struck by Iranian anti-aircraft fire but managed to return to safety without injuries to their crews.
On the other hand, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have shot down yet another US aircraft in the Isfahan region, characterizing the rescue mission by the Americans as an attempt to cover up their defeat by the Iranians.
At the time Trump made an official announcement that the rescue mission in Iran was a success, reports from US government officials reaffirmed the reports from Tehran that the American officials were confirmed rescued but not safe.
President Trump also claimed that the mission resulted in zero American casualties, stating the officer was safe and sound despite sustaining minor injuries.
However official reports from Tehran indicated that reports from Tehran in the city of Dehdasht, where clashes and airstrikes were reported throughout the night, at least four people were confirmed killed.
Furthermore, reports surfaced of a tragic incident near Koohdasht, where Iranian civilians allegedly rushed toward a house where they believed the pilot was barricaded.
In response to the Iranian crowds, the US Air Force reportedly launched airstrikes that left dozens of civilians wounded, with local families seen rushing victims to hospitals.

F-15E Strike Eagle Iran Attack
On Friday, April 3, an F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran, marking the first time a US fighter jet has been downed in combat in decades.
One crew member was recovered shortly after the crash, with the second crew member, a weapons officer holding the rank of colonel, remaining missing for two days, evading Iranian security forces.
On April 4, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported that the Iranian local officials from one of the southern provinces and the regional leadership of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps denied reports that the second pilot had been found and detained.

US Aircraft Lost in Iran
Iran is alleged to have been involved in the attack of approximately seven US aircraft, with the recent attack resulting in the loss of a US Air Force F-15 and an A-10 in separate incidents.
On March 2, three F-15s were downed by Kuwaiti air defenses in an incident over Kuwait.
During the attack, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that all six crew members were safely ejected, with three pilots returning to action in raids on Iran.
In addition to the three F-15s, a KC-135 jet tanker crashed in Iraq, killing six US crew members. The American military stated that the enemy did not down the tanker.
Moreover, on March 27, photos geolocated by CNN show that a US Air Force E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control aircraft was destroyed on the tarmac in an Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
Reports from CNN showed that the attack on the air base left at least 10 US service members injured with no fatalities.
