Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has said the government is on the final leg of rolling out the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) in higher learning institutions.
Machogu while speaking during the 4th Biennial Conference on University Research and Innovation on June 12 at the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC), urged Universities Vice Chancellors (VCs) to focus on implementing the Competency Based Education (CBE) and generate ideas that will continue making the rollout a success.
“While appreciating the progress made, universities need to do more in terms of research and outreach to make an impact on society. We need to see more collaborations or partnerships between universities, industry and communities,” Machogu said.
“Similarly, linkages between the universities and industry should be more robust, especially now as the country prepares to usher in Competency Based Education (CBE) at the higher education level.”
Furthermore, he challenged the VCs to proactively take leadership in talking to the industry in key activities such as curriculum development, internship, co- teaching and evaluation activities.

He emphasized that it is through such collaborations that students will be better prepared for the world of work.
The VCs were also advised to delve into the use of Artificial Intelligence and its capacity to personalize learning, enhance teaching, and support student success to bridge the skills gap between graduates and industry needs.

“My reflections oscillated around the global academic sphere, particularly on the trajectory our local universities need to take to catch up with other world-class institutions that offer a unique ecosystem in which intellectual inquiries and discoveries thrive, and the frontiers of human knowledge remain endless,” Machogu noted.
Competence Based Curriculum
In about four years, the first batch of CBC learners will join university.
The Government introduced CBC in 2017 which aims at nurturing of learners’ potential, national values, integration of Science, Technology and Innovation, and seeks to ensure that the skills taught in educational institutions match the requirements of industry.
CBC is designed to expose students to their career interests right after joining junior secondary school and thereafter to choose their career pathways in senior secondary school. Each senior secondary school should offer at least two pathways.
