Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has made history by recording the highest revenue collection in the city’s history.
In a statement made on June 12, Sakaja noted that the Nairobi Revenue System had recorded the highest ever figure of Ksh 12.1 billion.
“As of 12.30pm, the Nairobi Revenue System recorded the figure, with a few days remaining before the end of the Financial Year 2023/2024.”
“This means that the county could record Ksh13 billion in the ending Financial Year,” said Sakaja.
This achievement surpasses the previous record set by his predecessors, making Sakaja the first governor to record the highest revenue ever witnessed in the city’s history.

Challenges that Disrupted the County Govt’s Target
Sakaja noted that despite challenges posed by the El Niño floods that disrupted businesses and daily operations, his administration has managed to achieve this feat.
According to the governor, this was a major milestone as it is the highest revenue to be collected since the advent of devolution in Kenya.

The high revenue collection is partly attributed to the launch of the Unified Business Permit (UBP), which has made it easier for customers to pay for services.
However, the county had initially set a target of Sh19.9 billion for the Financial Year 2023/2024, which unfortunately could not be achieved by the end of the year.
Murang’a Hits 1 billion Own Source Revenue
This comes days after Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata announced that he had collected Ksh 1 billion own source revenue for the first time ever.
Kang’ata shared a poster congratulating Murang’a County Government Department of Finance and Economic planning headed by Finance and Economic Planning CEC Prof Kiarie Mwaura, Chief Officer Judy Mbaru and Director Gakahu.
“Today, revenue collected from the County has hit Ksh1 billion for the financial year 2023/2024. Within one year, the County has doubled its collection. This has been achieved without adding any extra taxes noting,” the Governor said.
Kang’ata explained that the county taxes were increased last in 2018.

The governor also congratulated sub-county revenue officers and all the officers who work in the finance department, including market workers and parking teams for the effort they have put.
