Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected as the President of South Africa during the first sitting of the National Assembly in the 7th Parliament on Friday.
The National Assembly is constitutionally required to elect a president from among its members at its first sitting after elections. Ramaphosa of the African National Congress (ANC) secured 283 votes, defeating Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) who received 44 votes.
As stipulated by the Constitution, the President-elect must resign from the National Assembly and assume office within five days by swearing or affirming loyalty to the Republic and adherence to the Constitution.
The inauguration ceremony for Ramaphosa will be held in Pretoria within the next five days. This marks the beginning of his second term in office.

Inauguration of Cyril Ramaphosa
Following his inauguration, the President will form a new cabinet, appointing ministers to oversee various government departments and implement the administration’s policies.
Additionally, President Ramaphosa will convene a joint session of the newly established National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces for the Opening of Parliament Address.

“The President will convene a joint sitting of the newly established National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces for the Opening of Parliament Address (OPA),” a statement from Parliament of the Republic of South Africa read.
In his victory speech, Mr. Ramaphosa hailed the new coalition, and said that voters expected the leaders to “to act and to work together for the good of everyone in our country”.
Malema After the Loss
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party leader, Malema, despite his loss, pledged to continue his fight for economic justice and vowed to hold the government accountable.

“Our struggle for a fair and equitable South Africa is far from over. We will keep pushing for the changes that our people deserve,” he remarked.
“We congratulate you Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, we accept the result and the voice of the people of South Africa. We accept the results,” he added.

In his acceptance speech, Ramaphosa acknowledged the fierce competition and emphasized the need for unity and collaboration to address the nation’s challenges.
“We must continue to work together to build a South Africa that is inclusive, prosperous, and free from the divisions of the past. I am committed to leading this country with integrity and determination,” he stated.
