Career Fields That Attract Highest Number of Employees – Report

The Federation of Kenya Employees (FKE) has revealed the career fields with the highest number of employees in Kenya.

In a Skills Need Survey Report dated Tuesday, November 21, FKE divulged the distribution of respondents involved in the survey by their economic sector.

To begin with, the findings showed that 21.9% of respondents were from the manufacturing sector.

“The findings also revealed that 8.8% of the respondents were from financial and insurance activities and 8.1% were from Not for profit,” said FKE.

Further, the Agriculture Forestry and Fishing sector was ranked fourth with 6.9% while 6.7 % did not reply.

Additionally, Education sector came in fifth with 6.7% followed closely by Transport and Storage with 6.5 %.

Next was Accommodation and Food Services activities with 4.8% alongside Wholesale and Retail Trade.

Other sectors with above 4% include Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (4.2%), Human Health and Social Work Activities (4.0%) and Information and Communication (4.0%).

Besides, Water Supply, Sewerage and Waste Management had 3.3% of the total employees followed closely by the Construction sector with 3.1% of the total.

Three career fields had 1.2% including Arts, Entertainment and Recreation: Real Estate Activities and Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply Sector.

In addition, the Administrative and Support Service Sector had 1.0% followed by Public Administration with 0.85%.

Furthermore, the Mining and Quarrying Sector had 0.6% while Compulsory Social Security was ranked last with 0.4%.

Hard to Fill Vacancies in Different Career Fields

Also, a total of 353 vacancies were cited to be hard to fill by the respondents against a total of 42,433 employees in different career fields.

Manufacturing topped the list with 196 hard to fill vacancies out of the total 38,080 employees.

Additionally, Accommodation and Food Service Activities was ranked second with 62 hard to fill vacancies out of 2,647 employees.

Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities had 48 hard to fill vacancies while Mining and Quarrying had 47 of them.

Education Level for Hard to Fill Vacancies

The education level sought by employers on these hard to fill vacancies was mostly a first level university education followed by TVET.

Further, the hardest to fill vacancies requiring a TVET skill level are in architecture, building and construction (2.3%), engineering (2.3%) and transportation, distribution, and logistics (2.9%).

On the other hand, those that mostly require first level university education are in information and technology (7.1%) and finance and business management (7.3%).

Also, the hardest to fill vacancies requiring a master’s degree qualification are in media, communication and public relations (1%).

Finally, those that mostly require doctorate degree qualification are in science and mathematics (0.4%).
