The incident came as heavy rains affected several parts of Mombasa County. on September 12 rainfall lasting more than 24 hours led to flooding in parts of Mombasa, disrupting transport and affecting several areas.

Mombasa has previously experienced incidents involving collapsing structures during periods of heavy rainfall. In April 2024, one person died and another was injured after a seawall under construction collapsed near Fayaz Bakery.

Two Siblings Die in Boat Capsizing

In a separate incident, two siblings died after a leisure boat, MV Blue Pineapple, carrying their family capsized in Tudor Creek, Mombasa.

The victims were part of a family of five that had travelled from western Kenya to the Coast for a holiday. The trip turned tragic when the boat overturned, leaving two family members dead and three others requiring medical attention.

The three surviving family members were taken to Coast General Hospital, where they were receiving treatment after the incident.

The governor also warned of erratic weather as the rainy season sets in, urging residents and operators to exercise greater caution.

“We are asking everyone right now, the season is here, we are having very, very erratic weather changes. So we have very safe areas that people can move from the Mombasa Beach to Chuda areas since water is very calm,” said Nassir

Coast region has experienced periods of intense rainfall and flooding this year, with Mombasa among the areas affected by heavy rains.

The county head has also cautioned the public about El Niño, especially those living along the coast.
