Over 2000 Kenyans have lost their lives through road accidents since the beginning of the year
Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna said the figure represented a 10.5 percent increase compared to 2,057 deaths on the same date last year.
Out of the total 2,200 deaths reported on Kenyan roads by the end of June 2022 number, 816 were pedestrians an increase of 20% compared to the same period last year
“Road accidents have rendered numerous families destitute because some of the victims are the sole bread winners. In several other cases, family earnings are depleted to settle huge hospital bills,” Oguna said in a tweet .
“As of 27th June 2022, more than 2,200 lives had been lost from road crashes. This is an increase of 10.5 per cent, compared to 2,057 deaths on the same date in 2021.”
Oguna blamed reckless driving for the increase in number of road accidents.
On Thursday Oguna led a road safety campaign at Kikopey along Naivasha- Nakuru Highway.
He called on Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) owners and drivers to take their vehicles for inspection.
Oguna claimed that majority of PSV vehicles lack speed governors.
He warned that vehicles that will not meet the set safety standards required for operations will be impounded.
