Former U.S. President Barack Obama has said that Donald Trump’s return to the White House is creating strain in his marriage with former First Lady Michelle Obama, according to remarks made in an interview with The New Yorker.
Obama, 64, described a situation where his continued involvement in public and political life has become a point of disagreement at home.
He said Michelle Obama has encouraged him to step back from political engagement so the couple can focus more on their private life after years in public service. However, he said current political developments have made that difficult.
Obama links political climate to personal strain
In the interview, Obama said that Trump’s return to the presidency has contributed to his decision to remain publicly active in political discussions. He argued that the current political environment requires continued engagement from former leaders, even after leaving office.
“That does create genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her,” Obama said, referring to Michelle Obama. He added that he understands her perspective and the desire for a quieter life away from Washington politics.
Obama did not elaborate further on private family matters but acknowledged that balancing personal life and public expectations has become increasingly complicated since leaving office in 2017.

Continued role in Democratic politics
Since leaving the White House, Obama has remained an influential figure within the Democratic Party. He has frequently been involved in campaign efforts, policy discussions, and public appearances supporting party initiatives.
He noted in the interview that his post-presidency role has been more active than that of most former presidents, saying he continues to be called upon during major political moments. Obama suggested that this ongoing demand for his presence in political spaces has made it harder to fully disengage.
While he did not directly criticize President Trump in the interview, he implied that the current political climate under Trump’s presidency has kept him engaged in national debates.
Obama also pointed out that expectations placed on former presidents today are different from earlier eras, where ex-leaders often maintained a lower public profile.

Public life after the White House
Beyond politics, Obama has remained visible in civic and cultural events. He has participated in public readings, educational visits, and appearances alongside Democratic figures in various states.
Most recently, he has been seen engaging with younger political leaders and supporting public initiatives, reinforcing his continued presence in national discourse.
His activities have kept him in the public eye more than many of his predecessors, even years after leaving office.
Despite this, Obama has also indicated a desire for more personal time, suggesting that the balance between public responsibility and private life remains a challenge.
