Tension has risen following reports that the suspect in the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting had a past link to former Vice President Kamala Harris through a small political donation.
The suspect, identified by law enforcement officials as Cole Allen, was taken into custody after the attack outside the Washington Hilton, where President Donald Trump and senior administration officials were attending the annual dinner.
Authorities said the incident prompted an immediate evacuation of the president, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other guests.
According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, Allen, 31, a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, was recognized as a “teacher of the month” at a private tutoring company on Sunday, April 26.
Officials said he was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun and a handgun, when he approached a security checkpoint near the event. One law enforcement officer was wounded.
Suspect’s background linked to Harris
Investigators say Allen appears to have acted alone, though they have not confirmed a clear motive. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told U.S. media that the suspect may have been targeting officials linked to the Trump administration.

Further details about Allen’s background have drawn attention. Federal Election Commission records reviewed by The Wall Street Journal show that he made a $25 donation in 2024 through ActBlue, a Democratic fundraising platform, with a note indicating support for former Vice President Kamala Harris during her presidential bid.
Authorities have not said that the donation is directly linked to the attack, and no evidence has been presented to suggest coordination with any political campaign or group. However, the revelation has fueled debate online and among political commentators.
Allen, who also completed a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, is expected to appear in court facing charges that include using a firearm during a violent crime and assault on federal officers.
Trump responds as investigation continues
President Trump described the suspect as a “lone wolf” and said the situation was under control shortly after the incident. In remarks to reporters, he also referred to the attacker as a “whack job,” while confirming that all attendees at the dinner were safe.

Law enforcement officials said Allen traveled by train from California to Washington, D.C., in the days leading up to the event. He had checked into the Washington Hilton as a guest, allowing him access to the area near the dinner venue.
The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that the suspect was apprehended quickly after approaching the security checkpoint. Officials are continuing to examine how he was able to reach the screening area with multiple weapons.
Political reactions raise tensions
The emergence of the suspect’s past political donation has added to an already charged political atmosphere. While some commentators have pointed to the contribution as a possible indicator of political leanings, others have cautioned against drawing conclusions before investigators establish a clear motive.
No direct link has been established between Allen and Harris or her campaign. Representatives associated with Harris have not issued a statement addressing the reports as of the time of publication.
