Former Tahidi High and Njoro wa Uba actor Bilal Wanjau has passed on.
In a statement on December 4, actress Sandra Dacha stated that Wanjau died on Thursday, December 4, in the morning due to diabetes complications.
“It is with profound sorrow that i announce the untimely passing on of my colleague Bilal Wanjau this early morning due to Diabetes complications,” read part of the statement.
Sandra Dacha described Bilal as a great, talented actor and the best in the industry.
Additionally, Dacha stated that Wanjau’s burial will be on Friday, November 5, 2025, at his rural home in Machakos.
“Kindly keep the family in your prayers,” she said.
“May God rest his soul in eternal peace.”
Kenyans Mourns Bilal Wanjau
Kenyans have taken to social media to express their disbelief and pay tribute following his passing.
Tony Sungu praised the actor by saying, “Ooh no this guy was a very great actor I remember him from set book an Enemy of the People, Tahidi High then I met him at national theatre a good guy indeed he wanted me to join him at maisha magic tv he called me and I told him already I had a job Rip big kahuna.”

Mary Ashford added and said, “He was a good entertainer, and we loved him. May rest in peace.”
Fredrick Murithi, another user, commented, “One of the best actors we ever had, from commercials to TV series like Njoro wa Uba, Jela 5-star, Hullabaloo Estate…. And many other Kenyan movies. May he rest in peace.”

The Rise of the Kenyan Actor
He starred in some of Kenya’s most beloved television series, including Tahidi High, Gavana, Mjinga na Ushenzi, Sumu la Mapenzi, and the ongoing Jela 5 Star on Maisha Magic. He was also the face of the national lottery campaign, “Utahama Lini?”, sponsored by Nation Media.
Bilal was the son of former Kenyan Olympic boxing bronze medalist Ibrahim “Surf” Bilal. His passion for drama began at St. Teresa’s Boys Secondary School and continued at Eastleigh High School, where he first drew attention as an exceptional young actor. His talent was later recognized by producers at the National Theatre, who provided him with opportunities to develop his craft.
Bilal often spoke about the need for greater recognition of the arts in Kenya, highlighting its potential as an alternative employment path for youth.
In 2017, he won Best Performance in a Comedy at the Kalasha Awards for his role in Jela 5 Star, cementing his status as one of the country’s most talented actors.
