One Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Candidate has been confirmed dead while two girls are sitting for their first day of KCSE in hospital after giving birth in Meru County.
Meru County Commissioner Jacob Juma said the student the candidate passed away on the night of Sunday, November 3, a day before the exams started.
Juma said the student was from Kamaro Secondary School while the girls gave birth at Meru Hospital.
“We have lost one male student who is from Tigania West. We also have two female students who were expectant, and they gave birth at Meru Hospital,” Juma said.
He explained that the information might change because the numbers may increase throughout the exam period.
“We will keep you updated as we receive them,” he said.
The Commissioner said the county has 412 examination centres where the KCSE examinations will be administered.
There 29,148 KCSE candidates, out of which, 13,907 are male while 15,241 are female.
Meru also has 151 adults who are sitting for the exams in five centres.
“The prisons have not been left behind; we have 12 prisoners who are taking part in the exams,” he said.

Warning to Exam Officials
Juma warned officers involved in the administration of KCSE including centre managers, supervisors, invigilators and police officers against being involved in exam malpractice.
He mentioned that all the stakeholders involved in the exam process have been briefed about their roles.
The Commissioner asked the officials to allow the candidates sit for the exams without interferences.

“Anybody who will be involved in malpractice will face the wrath of the law. The candidates should be left to sit their exams since they have prepared for all these years, people should not come in and try and destroy their hard work,” he said.

KCSE Candidate Drowns as Another One Disappears
This follows a different incident where Seth Ruben, a KCSE candidate at Our Lady of Fatima in Kariobangi went missing.
The father said Seth was last seen in the Lucky Summer area on the night of October 20.
“On Monday morning when we woke up, we couldn’t find him,” the father said.
In another tragedy, Abel Mwendwa, a KCSE student at Katelembo Center of Excellence High School died on October 20.
Abel drowned while swimming at a dam near the school. He was returning home when the incident occurred.
“I was the first person to arrive here and saw the boy and I jumped into the water to try and save him. He didn’t have clothes, I tried holding but he drowned before they could bring the ropes to help him out of the water,” said the first witness.
