Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared twelve (12) areas in Tana River County as security disturbed and dangerous.
In a special gazette notice dated October 11, Kindiki said the areas have been declared security disturbed and dangerous for a period of thirty 30 days.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 106 (1) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National Security Council, declares the following parts of Tana River County as security disturbed and dangerous,” read part of the notice.
The areas include Banpale Sub-County, Madogo Location, Ari Locations, Saka Location, Sola Location, and Laica.
Other locations are Midjambula Location, Harman Lescaun Hosingo Location, Dukanons Location, Chewele Location, Nanighi Location, and Hurs Location.
Residents Ordered to Surrender Guns
At the same time, CS Kindiki ordered residents in the said areas to surrender all arms in their possession to the nearest Police Station, Police Post, Police Camp and National Government Administration Offices
“On the taking effect of this notice, all inhabitants of the said areas are ordered, with immediate effect, to surrender all arms in their possession to the nearest Police Station, Police Post, Police Camp and National Government Administration Offices during the hours of the day for sale custody,” the order reads further.
“The notice shall take effect on 11th October 2024 as from 6.30 p.m. for a period of thirty (30) days and may, at any time be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, in each case, by notice in the Gazette direct.”

Meanwhile, Inspector General (IG) of Police Douglas Kanja ordered gun owners in 14 areas in Tana River County to surrender their firearms to the nearest police station.
“In exercise of powers under Section 106 (2)(a) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Inspector-General of the National Police Service has prohibited the possession of arms in specified parts of Tana River County,” read part of the notice.
This follows a declaration by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration on October 11, 2024, marking these areas as security-disturbed and dangerous for a period of 30 days.”
The affected areas include Bangale Sub-County, Madogo Location, Areri Location, Saka Location, Sala Location, Mororo Location, Mlulambala Location, Tana North Sub-County, Hirimani Location, Hosingo Location, Dukanotu Location, Chewele Location, Nanighi Location, and Bura Location.
