Njambi Koikai’s struggle with endometriosis

Her admission at the facility had come barely five years after her return to Kenya from the United States where she underwent treatment for complications arising from Endometriosis.

Back in January, Senator Gloria shared Njambi’s inspiring story noting that the deceased had to travel over 8,000 miles to America, to visit endometriosis specialists in the state of Georgia.

According to the nominated senator, Koikai’s full diagnosis was Stage IV Endometriosis, catamenial pneumothorax with diaphragmatic endometriosis, sigmoid and rectovaginal endometriosis, and abnormal appendix.

Thoracic endometriosis is a rare but extreme expression of the disease or the presence of endometriosis in or around the lung.

“The story of Njambi Koikai became of public interest when after enduring painful periods for 18 years, she suffered a lung collapse during her menstrual cycle a few years ago. To date she has suffered from over 12 lung collapses. She always tells me: “In layman’s language, my periods extended to my lungs”… and proceeds to laugh,” shared Senator Orwoba.

The nominated senator further revealed that ever since they met at a function where she had been invited as the guest of honor, they just clicked and proceeded on working on a couple of projects together.

Koikai Mourned

Following Njambi’s death, various media personalities have mourned her with digital communications strategist Philip Etale remembering her as a jovial person and a sister.

“I am gutted beyond expressions. Fare thee well my friend, sister and just best friend Fyah Mummah Jahmby Koikai. That beautiful smile, the phone calls we had talking about many things including our days at KBC back in the day, your mastery of Maragoli language and the jolly moments you shared with those you knew. You had a big family, just a big one… go well my friend,” he posted.

Njambi has always been vocal about endometriosis and has been championing awareness advocacy.

The deceased also vied for the Dagoretti South Member of Parliament seat and came in 4th on an independent ticket.
