The Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced that it will be laying off members of its staff as part of a workforce reduction due to the rapid changes in the journalism world.
NMG in a statement on Friday, June 7, 2024, made the announcement noting that the decision comes as the company navigates changes in its Transformation Agenda.
According to NMG, the move is aimed at adapting to the rapidly changing media landscape, driven by shifts in audience consumption habits and technological advancements.
“The media landscape is undergoing rapid transformation: Changes in audience consumption habits, technology, and other macro-economic factors have disrupted business models across the world.”
“While the industry has faced challenges, we are appraised of the digital content creation and consumption opportunity that exists not only in Kenya but across the continent.” reads part of the statement.

Nation Media Group Explains Why It Made the Decision
Due to these factors the company cited the need to evolving into a leaner and more agile organization that will drive the efficient delivery of services to its audiences.

“As part of the continued implementation of our strategy, we are evolving into a leaner, more agile organization that will drive the efficient delivery of services to our audiences and innovate rapidly to reap the benefits of the digital economy.
“Regrettably, this will necessitate a workforce reduction.” further read the statement.
Nation Media Group Makes Pledge to Affected Employees
The media house, however noted that the exercise would be carried out in consideration and respect to all employees involved.
“This exercise will be carried out with utmost respect to our employees and in adherence to Kenyan labor laws.”
Additionally, the company acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and pledged to provide the necessary support to all those who will be affected by the changes.
“This decision is incredibly difficult, and we are cognizant of the impact it will have on lives and livelihoods. We will therefore provide the necessary support to help those affected manage this transition.”
Earlier Reports of the Impending Layoffs at NMG
The statement by the Kimathi Street based media house follows reports speculating that a meeting was held on Friday, June 7, where senior management at NMG disclosed the news to staff.

During the meeting, it was reportedly also announced that the layoffs would take effect from Friday, June 14 and would largely affect staff working at the broadcast and print divisions.
The decision was attributed to the company’s struggle to generate revenue, with traditional revenue streams drying up and the much-touted paywall strategy failing to yield the desired results
