Ruto Announces New SGR Station

President William Ruto has announced a new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) night station after being asked by local residents.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony of Devki Steel Mills on Tuesday December 3, Ruto stated that the new night station will be located in Voi, Taita Taveta County.

Additionally, he mentioned that the new night stopover station will be operational starting December 15, 2024.

“You asked me about the train that passes here specifically at night without stopping,” Ruto said.

“I have informed the relevant ministry, and they have said that starting from the 15th of this month, the SGR will begin to stop at Voi.”

Ruto on Voi SGR Night Stoppage

At the same time, the Head of State stated that Ikanga Airport will resume operations on the same day, allowing people to fly in and out.

The Madaraka Expressway passenger afternoon Express train departs both Mombasa and Nairobi Termini simultaneously at 3:00 pm and includes a stopover at Voi station.

Meanwhile, the Night train departs both Mombasa and Nairobi Termini simultaneously at 10:00 pm but this service does not entail stops during the journey.

SGR Stations Between Nairobi and Mombasa

Currently, SGR has nine stations starting with the Nairobi Terminus being first of the SGR stations between Nairobi and Mombasa.

It is located in the Syokimau suburb, south of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The distance from Nairobi’s CBD to Syokimau is approximately 18.8 km.

Athi River Station is the second SGR station from Nairobi to Mombasa. It is located in Machakos County, approximately 20 km from Nairobi Terminus. This station serves the busy and vibrant town of Athi River and its surrounding areas.

Emali Station is the third station along the Nairobi-Mombasa SGR route. It is located in the fast-growing Emali Town in Makueni County, approximately 125 km from Nairobi. The station serves the residents of Emali Town and its surrounding areas.

Mtito Andei is one of the SGR stations in Kenya. It is located in Mtito Andei town in Makueni County, approximately 230 km from Nairobi. This station marks the midway point of the journey from Nairobi to Mombasa using the SGR.

Other Stations

Voi Station is located in Voi Town, the largest town in Taita-Taveta County. Voi is one of the most important commercial centers in the county. The town lies at the edge of the Tsavo National Park, which is a major tourist attraction in the country.

Miasenyi Station is the sixth station from Nairobi to Mombasa, located before reaching Mariakani. Its design features stripes, a signature beauty that reflects the wild within the area where zebras are abundant.

Mariakani Station is the last SGR station before you reach Mombasa. It is located in the relatively small town of Mariakani, which lies on the boundary of the Kaloleni and Kinango districts.

When you arrive in Mariakani en route to Mombasa, the long coconut trees provide a sense of anticipation, signaling that you are about to reach your final destination.

Mombasa Terminus is the final destination if you are traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa. It is the second-largest SGR station after Nairobi. The station is located in the Miritini suburb, about 11 km from Mombasa CBD.
