President William Ruto on Sunday, April 5, addressed the multi-billion-shilling fuel scandal, which has seen heads roll in the energy sector.

Speaking during a church service in Kilgoris, Narok County, Ruto vowed to deal with the cartels. In a stern warning, the head of state pledged to crack down on cartels and monopolistic practices in the country’s energy sector, promising stricter enforcement and regulatory oversight.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over substandard fuel and alleged price-fixing by some players in the market.

“I must say for the record, this is the administration that is going to deal firmly, decisively and conclusively with all cartels. We finish the cartels in the fertilizer sector, we finish the cartels in the sugar sector, we finish the cartels in the coffee sector, we will deal with the cartels in the oil sector. And that is as clear as it should be,” said Ruto.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has also stated that Kenya is not among the 29 countries whose economic stability has been affected.

On the fuel crisis, Mudavadi has commended that under the leadership of Ruto, Kenya will have a steady supply of Fuel after facilitating the G2G convention.

“The flow and supply of fuel for Kenyans shall be steady, reliable, and at a fair price. Thank you for the foresight,” said Mudavadi.

Wandayi assures Kenyans of Stable Fuel Supply Amid Energy Sector Changes

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has assured Kenyans of stable fuel supply despite recent disruptions in the petroleum sector, including the resignation of several senior officials in the Ministry of Energy and its agencies.

In a statement dated April 5, the Wandayi said the situation is under control and that there are sufficient petroleum stocks to meet current demand.

He has also revealed that after concerns emerged over a fuel shipment under investigation, a second cargo with similar issues was stopped to safeguard public interest.

“We have taken note of recent developments within the petroleum sector, including the resignation by a number of senior officials in the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and its agencies. The government wishes to assure the public that the situation is under control. When full information about the fuel shipment that is the subject of investigations emerged, we stopped the delivery of a second cargo under similar circumstances, thus protecting and securing public interest,” the statement read.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring an uninterrupted supply of quality petroleum products for both Kenya and regional markets.

It noted that the Government-to-Government (G-to-G) fuel procurement framework remains stable and continues to shield the country from global shocks, particularly those linked to tensions in the Middle East.

The government has also initiated an internal review of petroleum management systems to enhance transparency and protect the integrity of the supply chain. It also warned against cartels and profiteers seeking to exploit the situation, while urging the public to remain patient as investigations continue.
