Affordable Car Brands in Kenya: Models, Prices and What Buyers Should Know

Kenya’s vehicle market offers motorists a range of relatively affordable cars, particularly in the used-car segment.

Prices vary depending on the model, year of manufacture, mileage, condition, and specifications.

Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, Mazda, Honda, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi are among the Japanese brands with models available to Kenyan motorists.

A 2026 Kenyan motoring market guide lists the Nissan March, Toyota Passo, Toyota Vitz, Mazda Demio, Honda Fit, Suzuki Alto and Nissan Note among affordable car brands.

Toyota Among Most Affordable Car Brands

Toyota car brands have a broad presence in Kenya’s vehicle market, with models ranging from compact hatchbacks and saloons to SUVs, pickups and commercial vehicles.

For buyers working with a limited budget, commonly considered used Toyota models include the Vitz, Passo, Probox, Axio, and older Corolla models.

Toyota also sells new vehicles through its authorized Kenyan distribution network. Its current official range includes the Starlet, Corolla Sedan, Rush, Starlet Cross, Corolla Cross, and other vehicles.

Suzuki

Suzuki has a significant presence in the compact-car segment, with models including the Alto, Celerio, Swift, and older Wagon R models.

The Suzuki Alto is one of the smallest vehicles in the range. The current Kenyan specification has a 998 cc three-cylinder petrol engine, five seats, and a five-speed manual transmission.

The model has a 27-liter fuel tank and weighs 747kg, according to the specifications listed for the Kenyan market. Its equipment includes airbags, anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, air conditioning and an immobilizer.

Suzuki also provides a three-year or 100,000-kilometer manufacturer warranty on the current Alto.

Nissan: Small Hatchbacks, Family Cars and Commercial Vehicles

Nissan offers several models to Kenyan motorists, including compact hatchbacks, SUVs, pickups, sport utility vehicles and commercial vehicles.

The Nissan March, also known as the Micra in some markets, is one of the lower-priced small cars found in the Kenyan used market.

It costs approximately KSh270,000 to 350,000, with the price varying depending on the vehicle’s age, mileage, and condition.

The March’s compact dimensions make it well-suited to urban driving, particularly for motorists who prioritize a small footprint and easy maneuverability.

Nissan also has a range of larger vehicles. Its official Kenyan website lists the Magnite, Navara Single Cab, Navara Double Cab, NV350 Urvan, Qashqai, Terra and Patrol.

Mazda

Mazda’s affordable car brands in Kenya are concentrated largely in the used-car market.

The Mazda Demio, also sold as the Mazda2 in some markets, is one of the brand’s commonly encountered compact vehicles.

The Demio has evolved over several generations, with changes to its engine, transmission, body design, and equipment.

A 2026 Kenyan market guide lists used Mazda Demio models from around KSh500,000, though the price depends on the specific vehicle.

The Demio competes in the same broad compact-car segment as the Toyota Vitz, Nissan March and Honda Fit.

A prospective buyer should inspect the engine, gearbox, suspension, electrical system and bodywork before purchase. The condition of an individual vehicle can have a major effect on its eventual cost of ownership.

Honda

Honda is another Japanese manufacturer represented in Kenya’s used-car market.

The Honda Fit, sometimes known as the Honda Jazz, is among the compact models available to Kenyan buyers priced at around KSh500,000, though the price varies by generation and powertrain.

Some Fits are petrol-powered, while others are hybrids. Hybrid versions require additional checks because they use a battery and other specialized components.

The Honda Fit Shuttle is another option found among used imports. It has a longer body and offers more luggage space than the standard Fit.

Daihatsu

Daihatsu specializes in small vehicles and models designed for the Japanese market.

Kenyan buyers may purchase models such as the Daihatsu Mira, Move and Tanto in the used-import market.

The Mira is a small kei-class vehicle built around compact dimensions and relatively small engines. At the same time, the Move and Tanto use taller body designs and offer a different interior layout.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi has both the passenger-car and utility-vehicle markets.

The Mitsubishi Mirage and Colt are among the compact models available in the used market. It is a small hatchback and offers an option for motorists comparing compact Japanese vehicles.

Mitsubishi’s Kenyan vehicle range is not limited to small passenger cars. The brand’s official Kenyan distributor, Simba Corporation, lists the L200 pickup, including a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel double-cab model.

Import Requirements

The Kenya Revenue Authority requires imported used cars to be less than eight years old from first registration and right-hand drive.

Vehicles must also undergo a pre-shipment roadworthiness inspection by a KEBS-appointed inspection agent in the country of export.

“The Imported Vehicle Must be less than 8 years old from the year of first registration and will be subject to roadworthiness inspection by a KEBS-appointed inspection agent in the country of export,” KRA directs,

Importers must also provide documents including the commercial invoice, foreign logbook, bill of lading, and inspection certificate.

Additionally, applicable costs include 25% import duty, 16% VAT, excise duty, a 3.5% Import Declaration Fee, and a 2% Railway Development Levy.

Customs valuation, shipping, insurance, and clearing charges can further increase the final cost.
