The Mombasa County Commissioner John Otieno furiously warned and threatened to dismiss chiefs, assistant chiefs and village elders who failed to attend this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.
Speaking at the Mama Ngina Waterfront on December 12, 2022, where the fete was held, the County Commissioner noted that most of his juniors from Mombasa County had not availed themselves for the celebrations, as is the customs.
Otieno went on to threaten that he would issue dismissal letters, ordering a roll call to note those absent.
“I am aware that Kisauni DCC is unwell however where are the rest? Can those from Nyali, Kisauni and Mvita please stand up? Mvita team please aanzeni kuitana,” he directed.
“For all those who have failed to attend tomorrow you will all receive your letters once the Deputy County Commissioners (DCCs) of the areas provide me with the names of all those who are here today,” Otieno noted.

On his part, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir pleaded with the county Commissioner not to use punitive measures but inform his juniors of the need to attend such national events.
“Don’t take tough actions on them, however, teach them the need to attend such events and the roles they play in disseminating information to the grassroots,” Abdulswamad Nassir pleaded with the CC.
