Northern Collector Tunnel to Boost Water Supply
The Northern Collector Tunnel (NCT) is a key infrastructure project under Nairobi’s master plan to secure new water sources for the city and 13 satellite towns up to 2035.
Before the project, Nairobi faced an estimated water deficit of 125,000 cubic metres per day.
Funded by the World Bank, the project features Kenya’s longest tunnel, designed to channel floodwater from three rivers in Murang’a County—Maragua, Gikigie, and Irati—into the existing water supply network at Ndakaini Dam, Nairobi’s main water source.
The 11.8-kilometre underground tunnel is expected to add 140 million litres of water daily, helping to alleviate the city’s chronic water shortages
