A family in Kakamega county is seeking justice after their son was allegedly beaten to death by Nyumba kumi members in a village in Ikolomani.
The deceased was a 15-year-old boy and a form three student who was reportedly punished for being in a relationship with his classmate.
His father, Moses Meru could not hold back his tears after the life of his only son was cut short.
According to the father’s account, he had sent his first-born son to buy supper but at around 7pm, he received a call that members of the Nyumba Kumi unit had detained his son.
“I received a call by unknown number. The person introduced himself as the Nyumba kumi chairman. He told me that he was with my son,” the father narrated.
He further inquired to know their exact location so as he could go and see what was going on.
“He told me that we’re in Musingu and you can come,” continued Moses.
Kakamega Father Narrates How his Son Died
According to the distraught father, he went to the scene and found his son kneeling before the elders but extremely weak.
“After going to the scene, I found the chairman with a rod in his hands and he was tightly holding my son’s neck, ” he said.

The son wanted to meet his girlfriend, something that he didn’t know could end his life.

“At the meeting there was a woman who introduced herself as Betty. She told me that my son had come to see my daughter, a schoolmate. The woman then called the village elders to come and punish my son for talking to her daughter in her compound,” the father emotionally narrated.
“I didn’t know that my son was in critical condition. I didn’t even talk to my son. He left with my brother to go to his grandmother,”
According to Moses, while at the grandmother’s house, the son’s condition deteriorated at midnight. He was rushed to hospital unable to speak.
He was later transferred to Kakamega County Referral hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.
“I was told that my son had died. He has not been sick since he was young,” he continued.
Grandmother Speak on Student’s Death
The deceased’s grandmother, Roseline Khadiala raised concerns over the kind of discipline that was meted on her grandson.

“I was told that the kid is dead. I was wondered how they beat him. That is not discipline. The boy was a school going student and we all know the type of discipline that they’re always given. You can tell them to lie down then punish them with 2-3 strokes, but not that you beat him to death, ” explained Roseline.
Confirming the incident, Kakamega South police commander, Benjamin Wambua said investigations are still going on as they wait for postmortem results.
“The father went to check on his son only to be told that he has passed on. The body is lying at the mortuary awaiting postmortem. As of now we do not know the cause of the death but we’re waiting for the postmortem to be conducted ,” said the police commander.
