Renowned Media Personality Larry Madowo, known for his globe-trotting adventures as a CNN international correspondent, recently stumbled upon a hidden gem in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland.

To his delight, he discovered a Kenyan restaurant that not only serves authentic Kenyan cuisine but also offers a diverse array of dishes from various regions across the African continent.

Madowo, who is no stranger to exploring new culinary experiences, took to his social media platforms to share his excitement with his followers.

“I found a Kenyan restaurant in Glasgow with food from all over the continent,” he exclaimed, showcasing his enthusiasm for the unexpected find.

The restaurant, named Calabash African Restuarant, is owned by Elizabeth Ndung’u, also known as Mama Nyaks.

MS Ndung’u, who describes herself as “Ken-Gerian” (a blend of Kenyan and Nigerian), has brought a taste of Africa to the streets of Glasgow, creating a welcoming and inclusive dining experience for both Africans and their friends.

Larry Madowo Samples the Cuisine

During his visit, Madowo had the opportunity to sample a variety of dishes, each with its own unique twist.

He indulged in Nyama Choma, prepared in a Gambian-style, and plantain prepared in the Nigerian way.

The menu also featured Mukimo, a traditional Kenyan dish made with mashed potatoes, maize, and peas, as well as Jolof Rice, a popular West African rice dish.

But the culinary adventure didn’t stop there. Madowo also savored Isi Ewu (Goat head, a delicacy in most African cultures).

“I just had Nyama Choma the Gambian way, plantain the Nigerian way, Mukimo, Jolof Rice, Goat head, Isi Ewu at Calabash African Dine Restaurant in Glasgow,” he shared, clearly impressed by the diverse offerings.

African Culinary Haven

In a conversation with Madowo, Elizabeth explained the restaurant’s commitment to catering to the tastes of all Africans and their friends.

“In Calabash, we cater for all Africans and our friends,” she said.

“We have food from each and every region, we have food from West Africa, East Africa, South Africa, Central Africa.”

Ndung’u’s passion for sharing her culinary heritage is evident in every dish served at Calabash.

“Whoever comes down this door will have something to relate to as an African or a friend of Africans,” she added, emphasizing the restaurant’s mission to create a sense of community and connection through food.

Madowo, who has traveled extensively and experienced a wide range of cuisines, was clearly impressed by the quality and authenticity of the food at Calabash.

“It’s fantastic and it’s a lot of food. African portions in Europe,” he remarked, expressing his satisfaction with the generous servings.

The media personality also expressed a sense of belonging, saying, “I feel seen,” a testament to the restaurant’s ability to provide a taste of home for Africans living abroad.

Larry expresses Gratitude

As Madowo bid farewell to Calabash, he expressed his gratitude to Elizabeth and her family for their warm hospitality.

“Thank you so much, we very much appreciate your coming and your most welcome again and again,” Elizabeth said, welcoming Madowo to return anytime.

Madowo, in turn, reciprocated the sentiment, saying, “Thanks you so much for having us, we’ll be here all the time.”
