Moi University is one of the first public universities established in Kenya. Located in Kesses, it is 35 kilometers from Eldoret Town and 310 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.
Moi University comprises 14 schools, including the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the School of Arts and Social Sciences, the School of Sciences and Aerospace Studies, the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the School of Public Health, and the School of Tourism, Hospitality, and Events Management.
Additionally, it includes the School of Postgraduate Studies, Research & Innovation, the School of Engineering, the School of Business and Economics, the School of Dentistry, and the School of Education.
Other schools are the School of Information Sciences, the School of Medicine, and the School of Law.
History of Moi University Establishment
Moi University traces its origins back to 1984, established by an Act of Parliament (Moi University Act, 1984) as the second public university in Kenya.
This establishment was based on the recommendation of a Presidential Working Party chaired by Prof. Collins B. Mackay, who gathered opinions from Kenyans regarding the need for such an institution.
Due to his deep commitment to advancing education at all levels in Kenya, as both a professional teacher and Head of State, President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi championed the idea of a university in a rural setting.

The institution’s student population is approximately 30,000, distributed across five campuses in Kenya, which include:
- Main Campus – Located in Kesses, Uasin Gishu County, approximately 35 kilometers from Eldoret town.
- Eldoret Town Campus – Situated in Eldoret town, hosting the College of Health Sciences (near Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital), School of Law (at Annex), School of Tourism, Hospitality & Events Management (at Annex), and School of Business & Economics (at Annex).
- Nairobi Campus – Located in Nairobi at Bazaar Plaza, at the junction of Moi Avenue and Biashara Street.
- Coast Campus – Located in Mombasa along Moi Avenue, Liwatoni Road.
- Constituent College, which is Bomet University College located in Bomet.
Notable alumni include Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki, former KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Ouma Oluga, Kericho Senator and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheuriyot, Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale, and celebrated Kenyan journalist Alex Chamwada, known for his work with CHAMS Media as well as previous positions at major stations like Citizen TV and KTN.
Other notable alumni are Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri and Homabay Senator Moses Kajwang’.
