Nairobi County boss, Governor Mike Sonko is likely to face impeachment a motion got tabled by Kileleshwa Ward MCA, Michael Ogada.
Ogada, who is the minority leader of the assembly, wants Sonko out of office due to graft issues and abuse of office. He stated that the county boss has court cases that he attends to now and then, thereby unfit to hold office.
Threshold of Impeachment
While moving the notice of impeachment, Minority Leader Michael Ogada said eighty-six out of 122 members had appended signatures in support of the motion. This surpasses the threshold of forty-two signatures required to initiate the process of impeaching the governor.
Insiders say that the governor and his allies retreated to an impromptu meeting on Thursday afternoon to knock heads on the best way forward.
Sonko’s Impeachment
Sonko’s impeachment comes after he refused to assent to the bill on the KSh 37.5 billion 2020-21 budget, a move that was interpreted to curtail operations of the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS).
Sonko has maintained that he will not release money the Maj-Gen Mohamed Badi-led NMS terming it as a breach of law.
According to reports, the MCAs resolved to remove Sonko from office during two meetings held on Monday and Tuesday at Capitol Hill. However, the county assembly leadership refuted those claims saying the gatherings were about the Building Bridges Initiative.
Second Attempt Governor Facing Impeachment
This is the second time the embattled governor is facing an impeachment after escaping another attempt to oust him from office in February this year.
In February, President Uhuru Kenyatta met Nairobi Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from all parties at State House, Nairobi.
Out of the 122 Nairobi MCAs, 115 were in attendance in a meeting that focused majorly on the Nairobi county takeover by the National Government.
