Meet Accomplished Kenyan Medic Elected as World Medical Association President

She has worked at the Kenya Red Cross, the defunct NHIF, the Resuscitation Council (UK), Safaricom PLC, Emergency Plus Medical Services and the Hospital Holdings Investments in the Netherlands.

Former Kenya Medical Association (KMA) President Dr. Jacqueline Kitulu has been declared the World Medical Association President-elect in the 2025/2026-year cycle.

KMA in an update on Saturday, October 19, 2024, announced Dr. Kitulu’s election as World Medical Association (WMA) President following a hotly contested election.

WMA represents 115 national medical associations and more than 9 million physicians.

“Join us in congratulating Dr Jacqueline Kitulu⁩ former KMA President and now the World Medical Associate President-elect 2025/2026. We are global,” said KMA.

Dr. Kitulu beat Prof. Caldas Alfonso of the Portuguese Medical Association by 100 votes to 24, in the election held at the 75th WMA General Assembly in Helsinki, Finland.

The new WMA President-elect is an accomplished medical professional who worked at the Kenya Medical Association for 8 years.

At KMA, Dr. Kitulu started as a national secretary assistant in 2012, before assuming the role of National Vice Chair in 2014.

The WMA President elect then ascended to head KMA as President in April 2016, a role she held for four years until 2020.

Her decorated career started in 1999 as a clinical officer. She would then join the Nairobi Hospital as a casualty medical officer in 2001.

Kitulu worked for three years at the Nairobi Hospital before joining the United States (US) Embassy in Kenya as a panel physician.

While still working at the US Embassy, the medic was enrolled in the Kenya Medical Women’s Association in 2006 as a Treasurer and later served as the National Chairperson between 2008 and 2012.

In addition, she held the role of Committee Chair of Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) between January 2020 and January 2023.

Dr. Kitulu has worked at the Kenya Red Cross for more than 12 years where she assumed different roles such as Deputy Governor, and Finance Committee member.

Also, she has worked at the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) as the chair, Finance Committee between December 2018 and November 2021, Certified Instructor at the Resuscitation Council (UK), Health Advisory Panelist at Safaricom PLC, Emergency Plus Medical Services as a Director, and as a Member Board of Directors at Hospital Holdings Investments in the Netherlands.

Other roles the accomplished medic has held include Vice Chair Kenya Consumer Protection Advisory Committee (KECOPAC), Director Kenya Healthcare Federation, Governing Council Member at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Communication & Advocacy Panel Member at the World Medical Association, and Vice Chair National Resuscitation Council of Kenya, among others.

Education and awards

Dr. Jacqueline Kitulu holds a Bachelor of Medicine-Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Business Administration (MBA, HealthCare Management) from Strathmore Business School.

She has won several awards in her career including the Kenya Association of Family Physicians (KAFP) Lifetime Achievement Award issued in May 2022 and the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (O.G.W) issued by former President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta in December 2021.

Other awards include Jacob’s Well Award 2017, Women Living Deliberately, African Most Outstanding Female Professional Award issued by the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development, and the Distinguished Service Award issued by Kenya Medical Association in April 2019.

WMA while congratulating Dr. Kitulu for her election listed the objectives that the Kenyan medical professional outlined for her term as the World Association’s president.

They include Inter-regional cooperation to bridge gaps and increase advocacy, mentoring and capacity-building for junior physicians, and collaboration to address global challenges to be better prepared.

Dr Kitulu also stressed the importance of global advocacy for primary, robust healthcare systems delivered by a strong healthcare workforce, to improve global health outcomes.

She further promised to lead WMA with transparency, compassion and unwavering commitment.

The WMA General Assembly marked the 60th anniversary of the Helsinki Declaration.

The outgoing WMA President Lujain Alqodmani gave a farewell speech and the amazing highlights of her year as she welcomed the new WMA President Ashok Philip for the 2024/25 year who was sworn in during the ceremony.
