Sylvia Mulinge Named Best CEO Across 20 Countries

She joined the multinational telecommunications company in October 2022 after working at Safaricom for over 14 years.

Former Safaricom Chief Consumer Business Officer Sylvia Mulinge emerged as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Year across 20 countries.

Mulinge, the CEO of MTN Uganda, received the award during MTN’s gala dinner in South Africa on Wednesday, February 5.

The multinational telecommunications company operating in 20 countries announced on Thursday while congratulating the CEO for her exceptional leadership.

“This prestigious award, announced at the MTN #GL25 gala dinner in Johannesburg is a testament to Sylvia Mulinge’s exceptional leadership and culture of excellence that continues to thrive at MTN Uganda. This achievement is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the team and underscores the impact of our collective efforts,” said MTN Uganda.

At the awards gala, MTN Uganda also received other notable accolades, including the Group President and CEO Award, Million Dollar Award – Best OpCo of the Year, and Value-Based Capital Allocation.

In her reaction, Sylvia Mulinge said, “See what the Lord has done! What an amazing surprise! I’m still processing.”

Mulinge joined the multinational telecommunications company in October 2022 after working at Safaricom for over 14 years.

At Safaricom, the MTN CEO climbed through the ranks to hold the position of Chief Consumer Business. She had joined the telecommunications giant in 2006 as a Prepay Product Manager.

Mulinge held the role up to November 2007 when she was promoted to the role of Head of Retail. Over the years, Mulinge went on to serve as Head of Safaricom Business- Sales, General Manager- Enterprise Business, and Director- Consumer Business.

In November 2018, the now MTN CEO was promoted to the role of Chief Customer Officer at Safaricom, a role she held for over two years, before she was promoted as the company’s Chief Consumer Business Officer.

Before joining Safaricom, Mulinge worked at Unilever Kenya Limited as Brand Manager of Sunlight between 2005 and 2006.

She had joined Unilever Kenya after her stint at Unilever South Africa where she kickstarted her career as Regional Assistant Brand Manager, Laundry in 2004.

The MTN Uganda CEO holds a bachelor’s degree in food science and technology from the University of Nairobi (UoN).

Sylvia also holds several certifications and licenses including Practitioner Diploma in Executive Coaching from the Academy of Executive Coaching and Scaling Entrepreneurial Ventures from the Harvard Business School among others.

She is also a recipient of the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear, a Presidential Award popularly known as M.B.S.
