While speaking before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Kabogo revealed that his net worth currently stands at Ksh3.01 billion.

He clarified that his wealth is made up of assets, real estate, pieces of land, and wealth accumulated over years.

“In residential houses, my total net worth is Ksh700 million, movable assets of about Ksh40 million, land and farm about Ksh756 million, cash and current assets of about Ksh64 million, interest and shares in companies approximately Ksh1.5 billion. A total of about Ksh3.01 billion,” said Kabogo.

However, the declaration by the former Governor led to an uproar among Members of Parliament, some of whom contested the net worth, with some of them opining the flamboyancy of the businessman in the society did not match with the figures.

One MP wondered why Kabogo had not mentioned that he owned a chopper, which according to him should have been placed in the movable assets category.

The CS nominee reaffirmed his declaration, noting that he once owned a chopper but had already sold it.

“I had a chopper when I was a young man, and I could fly it myself because I am a pilot. So, when I could not fly as much, I decided to let it go,” said Kabogo.

Kabogo nominated

President William Ruto nominated William Gitau Kabogo to be the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy in December 2024.

Kabogo served as the first governor of Kiambu County for one term after his election in the 2013 general election.

If approved, he will succeed Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u, who was redeployed as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana.

Prior to his nomination, William Kabogo served as the party leader of Tujibebe Wakenya Party.

Early life and Education

Kabogo was born and raised in Komothai village of Githunguri Constituency, Kiambu County.

He attended local schools, among them Thika Technical School before joining Punjab University in India where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1982.

He returned to Kenya after his graduation and initially worked as an auditor before venturing into private business.

Kabogo made a debut into elective politics in 2002, when he sought the Juja parliamentary seat.

Being among the first politicians in Kenya to use a chopper in an election campaign, his flamboyant campaigns gained immediate national attention and consequently propelled him to win the parliamentary seat.

Kabogo, however, lost the Juja parliamentary seat in the 2007 general election under controversial circumstances that included widespread allegations of rigging.

The wealthy politician successfully challenged the election of the late George Thuo and subsequently won the 2010 by-election on a Narc Kenya ticket.

He later switched loyalties and was part of the team that helped former President Uhuru Kenyatta form The National Alliance (TNA) Party which later negotiated with URP’s William Ruto to form the Jubilee coalition.

Kabogo was elected Kiambu Governor in the 2013 general election on a TNA ticket but served for only one term after he lost the 2017 general election to Ferdinand Waititu.

Outside office, the Tujibebe Wakenya Party leader remained politically active, often using social media and vernacular stations to position himself as one of the political leaders offering direction in the Mt Kenya region.

The former governor who has also been a close confidant of former President Uhuru supported the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

In the 2022 general election, Kabogo again vied for the Kiambu gubernatorial seat on his Tujibebe Wakenya Party ticket but lost to current governor and former Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi.

The former Juja MP is married Philomena Kabogo, and they have two sons, Alvina and Andrew. Despite his public life, he keeps his family life relatively private.
