Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre, a Peñafiel footballer, died on Wednesday, July 3, morning in a traffic accident in Spain.
The incident occurred on the A-52 in the province of Zamora as confirmed by emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region.
“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire,” a statement read.
“1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.”

A Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent to the scene. The responders, however, confirmed the death of two people on the scene.
The tragic news comes just two weeks after Jota married his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso in Porto, adding to the heartbreak surrounding the tragedy.

Diogo Jota, the late Liverpool and Portugal forward, had a close-knit family that included his wife, children, and younger brother.

Rute Cardoso was Diogo Jota’s longtime partner and wife. The couple had been together since their teenage years and got engaged in 2022.
Rute is known to be a private person despite her social media presence, and she often shared glimpses of their family life online.

Diogo and Rute had two sons. Their first son, Dinis, was born in February 2021 while their second son was born in March 2023.
Brother: André Silva
Diogo Jota’s younger brother was André Silva, a professional footballer who played for Gondomar in Portugal.
André used the family surname “Silva,”.

Diogo Jota started his career in the youth stages in Portugal and Spain. In 2017, Jota joined English side Wolverhampton Wanderers where he played a central role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
In 2020, Jota joined Liverpool where he went on to play make 182 appearances for the club. During his stint at the club, the Portugues forward scored 65 goals during a five-year spell. He also helped the English side win two Premier league titles, two League Cups (Carabao), and the 2021 FA Cup.
