The Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), commonly known as Kasarani Stadium, is a premier multi-purpose sports complex located in Kasarani, Nairobi, Kenya, approximately 15 km from the city center along Thika Road.
Historical Background
It was constructed in 1987 to host the All-Africa Games and has since become a central hub for sports and events in the region.
The first phase was completed in time for the games, marking its debut as a world-class facility. Its historical importance is further highlighted by its appearance on the 20 Kenyan shilling note, proving its national significance.
Facilities and Capacity
The complex is a comprehensive sports hub, featuring a main stadium with a capacity of 55,000 seats post-recent renovations, down from previous estimates of 60,000 or 65,000, equipped with a running track and pitches for football and rugby.

The complex has a competition-size swimming pool, ideal for aquatic sports and an indoor arena with a 5,000-seat capacity, hosting a variety of sports including volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, badminton, boxing, wrestling, martial arts, and table tennis.
The accommodation includes a 108-bed hotel, providing accommodation for athletes and visitors, equipped with modern amenities like TVs and telephones.
Additional amenities include modern changing rooms, restaurants (a 200-seater and a 60-seater grillroom), mini-shops, press/media areas, and six conference rooms each accommodating 60 people, with internet hotspots for connectivity.
Recent upgrades, initiated in 2024, include a new, larger roof, flood lighting enhanced to 3,000 Lux, and the installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) cameras.
These renovations were driven by its selection to host the CHAN 2024 and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with the capacity adjustment to 55,000 ensuring compliance with modern safety and viewing standards.
Moi International Sports Centre Important Events
Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, has hosted a range of significant events since its establishment in 1987.
The facility is the home ground for Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, hosting numerous international and friendly matches.
It is also the regular venue for Kenyan Premier League matches, including teams like Mathare United and Tusker FC.

The ground has annually hosted the Safari Sevens Rugby tournament, a prominent rugby sevens event in East Africa.
