Net Worth Kshs645 million

Charles Kwabla Akonnor is a highly respected Ghanaian football manager and former international midfielder, currently serving as the head coach of Gor Mahia FC in Kenya.

Background

Charles Akonnor was born on March 12, 1974, in Nungua, Accra, Ghana, and began his school days at Nungua Primary and Junior High School, and later at Nungua Presbyterian Secondary and Commercial School.

His professional playing career started in Ghana with clubs like Young Hearts, Okwawu United, and Obuasi Goldfields.

In Germany, he played for Fortuna Köln, making over 150 appearances and scoring more than 25 goals, and later joined VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

At Wolfsburg, he made 121 appearances and scored 13 goals over five seasons, captaining the team in the 2001-2002 season, a testament to his leadership on the pitch.

His international career with Ghana was equally illustrious, earning 51 caps and scoring 13 goals, and captaining the Black Stars from 1998 to 2001.

He participated in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (1994, 1996, 1998, 2000), with Ghana finishing as runners-up in 1998, and competed in the 1996 Olympics.

His performances earned him a place in the 1998 CAF Team of the Year and the AFCON Team of the Tournament.

Akonnor’s playing career also included stints at SpVgg Unterhaching in Germany, AC Horsens in Denmark, where he helped establish the club in the Superliga, and Alki Larnaca in Cyprus, before retiring in 2009 after a brief spell with SC Langenhagen.

Coaching Career

After retiring from playing on February 18, 2009, Akonnor transitioned into coaching, starting with Sekondi Wise Fighters, where he served as head coach and later Director of Sports.

His managerial career in Ghana began at Hearts of Oak. He was the head coach from March 19, 2012, to November 2012, but was sacked after a poor run of form, earning only 4 points from 15 matches with three consecutive defeats.

He then managed Dreams FC from 2014, promoting the team to the Ghana Premier League in 2015 after topping Division One League Zone III, finishing 9th in their debut season, but left in November 2017 after the club faced demotion due to registration issues in December 2016.

At Ashanti Gold, he served as interim and then permanent coach from April to December 2017, achieving 10 wins, 3 draws, and 6 losses in 19 matches, finishing 12th and avoiding relegation, and placing 2nd in 2018 before the league was suspended due to a GFA scandal.

Charles Akonnor was named GPL NASCO Coach of the Month for March 2018 but was suspended and dismissed in June 2018 for reportedly missing training sessions.

His most notable achievement came at Asante Kotoko, where he was appointed head coach on October 1, 2018, on a two-year deal, leading the team to win the 2019 GFA Normalisation Committee Special Competition and qualify for the CAF Champions League, though he was dismissed in July 2019 and replaced by Kjetil Zachariassen.

Charles Akonnor also served as assistant coach under Kwesi Appiah for the Ghana national team from October 30, 2019, before becoming head coach on January 15, 2020.

His tenure with the Black Stars ended on September 13, 2021, after poor results in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including a 1-0 loss to South Africa and a win against Ethiopia, leading to his dismissal along with assistants David Duncan and Patrick Greveraars.

Despite these challenges, his experience managing at both club and international levels has prepared him for his new role.

Appointment at Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia’s decision on August 1, 2025, to appoint Charles Akonnor came after a trophyless 2024/25 season, where the team finished second in the FKF Premier League.

The club’s chairman, Ambrose Rachier, stated, “We believe Coach Akonnor has the right credentials to take Gor Mahia to the next level.”

He has signed a 2-year contract and has received the support of having his technical team with his own squad from Ghana.

“I have set my goals for the club, and I will be working with all stakeholders to achieve the success needed. We need to set up a solid team that can achieve the best, and we will work together towards a common goal to achieve what we want as a club.”
