The head of the debates’ Secretariat, Clifford Machoka has announced that the 2022 Presidential Debate will be held on July 26.
Through a statement delivered on Monday, July 4, Machoka, reported that the presidential debates shall be held a week after the Deputy Presidential Debates scheduled for July 19.
He added that this year, the secretariat shall also oversee a Gubernatorial debate which shall take place on Monday, July 11.
“This is in recognition of the central place held by devolution in our governance and the growing need to ensure greater accountability at the county level,” wrote Machoka.
According to the statement, gubernatorial debate shall continue in two tiers. The first will entail aspirants whose popularity ratings stand below 5% whereas, the second will entail those whose popularity is above 5%.

Furthermore, Machoka revealed that moderators for the first tiers will be Serfine Achieng’ Ouma of KBC and Ayub Abdikadir of K24.
Likewise, the Zubeida Koome of KTN and Mark Masai of NTV will moderate the second tier. Also, Waihiga Mwaura of Citizen TV will moderate both debates.
In addition, the selected moderators have been given the responsibility of preparing questions to ask candidates.
However, they have been discouraged against sharing the questions with the candidates before the debate. As such, they have received orders not to meet any aspirants or even their campaign teams.
Nonetheless, all debates will be held at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa (CUEA) main campus in Karen, Nairobi, from 5:00pm to 10:00pm.
