Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho ghetto president, is an activist and the president of the Bunge la Mwananchi Movement.
His early life in Rongo, Migori County, was marked by hardships as he lost his parents, dropped out of primary school around 2002 in class six, being the eldest of 5 siblings.
Briefly, he moved to Nairobi, where he started hustling in the slums with only Kshs 1800, and later he joined a football team that doubled as a petty robbery gang.
On April 14, 2014, Gaucho was among the suspects involved in raiding a petrol station in Ruiru town and stealing Ksh2 million before fleeing to the Kasarani area.
The incident, which left three thugs dead, was a life-changing experience for Calvince Okoth alias ‘Gaucho’, who was linked to the suspected criminal gang.
Educational Background of Gaucho
Gaucho’s formal education began in Rongo, Migori County, where he dropped out of primary school in Class Six around 2002 due to financial hardship.
Seeking opportunities in Nairobi, he briefly joined local slum football teams, earning the nickname “Gaucho” because of his skill and passion.
Years later, motivated to resume learning, he completed his Form Four in 2023 by enrolling in adult education at Gumbaru School in Nairobi.
Additionally, he attended the Diguna Discipleship Training College for one year, focusing on religious and leadership training.
He also expressed interest in improving his English through language classes.
Career life

This inspired him to join Azimio la Umoja as an aspiring politician and youth leader, vowing to change his life for the better.
He started an initiative supporting single mothers whose husbands were convicted and mentored those convicted of crimes such as theft.
His life took a dramatic turn in 2013 when he sought entry into politics under ODM.
After failing to secure a party ticket, he disrupted campaigns in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, a move that caught the attention of Rosemary Odinga.
Gaucho rose to national prominence through Bunge la Mwananchi, which he led during public demonstrations of the 2023 cost-of-living protests.
His fiery speeches and mobilisation efforts earned him media attention and a reputation for fearlessly representing the urban poor voices.
Gaucho’s activism
Gaucho operates several informal side businesses in Nairobi, emphasising that these “side hustles” grant him autonomy from political elites and enable him to fund his activism independently.
His activism frequently led to arrests. In May 2023, Gaucho was arrested outside City Hall in Nairobi by undercover police for “creating a disturbance” (contrary to Section 95(1)(b) of the Penal Code).
He was arraigned at Kiambu Law Courts and released on KSh 5,000 cash bail; however, he still maintained his will to “continue speaking truth to power” despite repeated detentions.
Gaucho took part in the 2024 protests on the finance bill, which were led by the Gen Z Movement, which led to several killings by the police.
Later on, June 18, 2025, Calvince broke his silence after viral claims linked him to goons who disrupted peaceful protests in Nairobi. The protests for justice for Albert Ojwang.
Calvince Okoth, a staunch Raila Odinga supporter, denied involvement, saying he was out of the country on business and had no role in sponsoring violence.

However, it is known that Gaucho grew up in a family where he was the eldest of 5 siblings, and his parents died while they were still young.
