Rita Kavashe is a Kenyan entrepreneur and a corporate executive serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Isuzu Motors.
Early Life and Educational Background
Rita Kavashe was born in 1968 in Taita-Taveta County, located in southeastern Kenya.
She grew up in a modest rural setting, attending local primary and secondary schools in the region.
Her academic excellence in high school earned her admission to Moi University in 1988, where she pursued a Bachelor of Education degree, graduating in 1995.
Rita then went on and enrolled at the University of Nairobi in 2005, earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Her quest for leadership excellence later took her to the Harvard Business School in 2013, where she completed the Business Leadership Program.
In addition, she became a certified executive coach through the Academy of Executive Coaches (AOEC), United Kingdom, further strengthening her credentials as a transformative leader.
Career
Rita Kavashe’s professional journey began in 1995, immediately after completing her undergraduate studies, when she joined General Motors East Africa (GMEA) as a sales representative.
Her early years were marked by rapid growth through the ranks, driven by her strong performance and leadership potential.
Between 1995 and 2010, she held several key sales and marketing positions in Kenya and South Africa.
In 2010, she spent six months in South Africa working at GM’s regional facilities, gaining international exposure and experience in automotive operations.
Her breakthrough came in 2011, when she was appointed Managing Director of General Motors East Africa, becoming the first Kenyan—and one of the few women globally—to lead an automotive manufacturing company.
Under Rita Kavashe’s leadership, General Motors East Africa maintained its position as the largest motor vehicle assembler in East Africa.
In 2015, following the acquisition of GM East Africa by Isuzu Motors, Rita successfully oversaw the transition to Isuzu East Africa Limited.
She retained her role as Managing Director, steering the company through a significant restructuring process.
In 2017, she led a strategic move to relocate the assembly line for Isuzu pick-up trucks from South Africa to Kenya, creating 150 new jobs and strengthening local manufacturing capacity.
Beyond her executive role, Rita serves on multiple boards and industry bodies.
She is Chairperson of British American Tobacco Kenya Plc, Independent Non-Executive Director at Bamburi Cement. She sits on boards such as Safaricom Plc, Kenya Roads Board, and National Transport & Safety Authority.
She is also a member of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance Advisory Council and the Palmhouse Foundation Board.
