Age and Early Life
He was born in 1943. Oburu comes from the well-known Odinga family. His late father Jaramongi Oginga Odinga was Kenya’s first vice president.

Odinga Oginga is the eldest son of Jaramongi and is the brother of Ruth Odinga (Kisumu County Women Rep) and Raila Odinga (former Prime Minister), among other siblings.
Oburu Odinga Educational Background
Oburu attended the Soviet Secondary School in Moscow, Russia from 1962-1964 where he completed his Secondary School Certificate.

He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in economics from People’s Friendship University in 1967.
Additionally, he holds a doctorate (PhD) from the University of People’s Friendship which he earned in 1970.
Career & Politics Background
In 2022, he was elected as the Senator for Siaya County, and he is Energy Committee Chairperson in the Senate.
Odinga’s political career began in 1974 when he was elected as a councilor in Kisumu Municipality.
From 1981 to 1994, he served as an economist in the Ministry of Planning and National Development.
In 1994, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency, a seat that was previously held by his father.
He also served as the Assistant Minister of Finance in the Grand Coalition government in 2008.
From 2013 to 2017, Dr Oburu served as a nominated Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency.
Moreover, he represented Kenya in the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) as a member of parliament and commissioner from 2018-2022.
In 2021, he authored his autobiography, “In the Shadow of My Father” detailing his life and political journey.

He is married to Anna Oburu and has several children including Jaoko Obura Odinga.
