Biography
Yvonne Okwara is a Kenyan media personality with 13 years’ experience in radio and television. She is currently a Senior News Anchor and Editor in charge of Research and Planning at Citizen TV.
Education
Okwara is an alumnus of All Saints Cathedral Primary School, Kianda High School and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
The news anchor studied microbiology; however, she ended up pursuing a career in journalism.
Career of Yvonne Okwara
Yvonnes career in journalism began as the host of KBC’s children’s variety show, and as she gained experience, more opportunities opened up for her.
Afterwards, in 2008, she joined QFM as a radio talk show producer and also had the opportunity to do voice-over work for NTV’s business show Money Matters.
Subsequently, Okwara joined KTN on a five-year contract in 2012. However, when the contract ended in 2018, she chose not to renew it.
Following her exit from KTN, Yvonne opted to join Citizen TV as a prime-time news anchor.
When she is not working as a news anchor, Okwara does voice-overs for various TV shows.
She has moderated several local and international panels comprising Melinda Gates, Former US Secretary of Treasury Jack Lew, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Chairman Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Other panels include, Governor Central Bank of Kenya Dr. Patrick Njoroge, Former IMF Deputy Managing Director Min Zhu, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe, Bishop TD Jakes, as well as former AfDB President Donald Kaberuka.
Similarly, in 2017, she moderated the Presidential Debates in Kenya.
Other Positions Aside from Anchoring
Yvonne is a board member at CBM Kenya, a development organisation that works to improve the lives of persons with disability.
Additionally, she chairs the Advisory Board of Africa Uncensored, an independent media house set up by Kenya’s finest investigative journalists.
At the same time, Yvonne is a Bloomberg Africa Leadership Initiative Media Fellow.
