Zain Verjee is one of Kenya’s most accomplished international journalists with a distinguished career in broadcasting.
Zain is also a media entrepreneur, communications consultant, and African storyteller, best known for her 14-year tenure at CNN.
She is the founder and CEO of the Zain Verjee Group (theZVG), a strategic communications and advisory firm.
Before joining CNN, Zain was rejected 10 times, an event that she terms the most challenging in her media career.
“CNN rejected me about 10 times before they hired me. Capital FM was giving me a salary, and I was saving it. It was in Kenya shillings, which in dollars at the time was not much. And whatever I was earning, I was saving. And ultimately, after the 10th time, the woman I was emailing cracked,” Zain Verjee explained on her journey in the media industry.
Early Life and Family
Zain Verjee was born and raised in Nairobi and is the firstborn of the two children in the family.
She has a brother named Irfan, whom she describes as sharing the same determination and work ethic.
In interviews, she has credited her parents and grandparents for instilling values of hard work, ethics, curiosity, and lifelong learning.
Hussein Verjee, who is Zain’s grandfather, was the first President of the East African Indian Congress.
Her father, Johnny Verjee, is a hotelier who was born in Nairobi, while her mother, Yasmin, is a DNA sequencing and forensic expert born in Kisii and raised in Kisumu.
Her great-great-grandfather, Suleman Verjee, sailed on a dhow from the island of Diu, off the coast of Gujarat State in India, and arrived at the port of Mombasa, Kenya, in 1850.

Educational Background
Verjee studied in Nairobi before continuing her education abroad, where she attended Hillcrest Preparatory School and Hillcrest Secondary School in Nairobi.
Between 1991 and 1995, Zain pursued a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Cultural Studies at McGill University.
At the University of Oxford, Zain further pursued a Master of Studies in Creative Writing between 2013 and 2015.
Zain Verjee Media Career
Verjee began her broadcasting journey at 98.4 Capital FM in Nairobi at the age of 22 before becoming a CNN anchor, where she worked as a radio presenter for 4 years, starting in January 1996.
As a radio presenter, Zain’s first role was as a traffic and travel reporter.
She later moved into presenting and eventually became the host of Lovelines, a popular late-night relationship program.
During a 2026 interview, Verjee humorously recalled giving relationship advice to listeners while still in her early twenties.
Zain later hosted the Capital FM mid-morning program before moving toward hard news journalism.
A turning point in Verjee’s career came on August 7, 1998, during the bombing of the United States Embassy in Nairobi when she was on air at Capital FM’s studios in Lonrho House.
The incident drew the attention of BBC personnel working alongside Capital FM at the time, and Verjee subsequently became involved in documentary and news reporting projects.
Additionally, Verjee worked across multiple media, including the Kenya Television Network (KTN) and BBC.

Achievements Across CNN and Entrepreneurship
According to Verjee, CNN rejected her approximately ten times before finally giving her a chance.
Determined to prove herself, Zain saved money from her Capital FM salary and paid for her own trip to Atlanta for a screen test after CNN agreed to evaluate her.
Following the screen test, CNN hired her as a writer-producer and later trained her as an anchor and correspondent.
Verjee joined CNN in 2000 and spent 14 years with the network.
During her time there, she worked as a CNN anchor, international correspondent, State Department correspondent, Co-anchor of Your World Today, and Presenter of World One.
As CNN’s State Department correspondent, Verjee traveled extensively with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice while covering U.S. foreign policy and major diplomatic developments.
After leaving CNN in 2014, Verjee shifted her focus to entrepreneurship and communications.
She founded the Zain Verjee Group, which provides communications strategy, executive positioning, storytelling, media advisory services, and artificial intelligence communication solutions.
The firm has worked with organizations including Bloomberg Media, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the World Health Organization, the Aga Khan Development Network, the Equity Group Foundation, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and Pfizer.
Further, Zain co-founded aKoma Media and later launched Amplify, a creator fellowship program developed in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation to support African storytellers and digital creators.
In addition, Zain Verjee co-founded Rouse, a platform connecting women leaders across Africa and the diaspora.
