George Aladwa has today, December 3, 2025, addressed claims that he will be the running mate in 2027, announcing that he will run for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat independently on the ODM ticket, declaring himself the longest-serving politician in Nairobi.
“I wish to clear the air. Being currently the longest serving politician in the city, I will be contesting for the governorship of Nairobi County on the ODM ticket,” Aladwa said.
Aladwa was recently mentioned by the former CS for Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management, Moses Kuria, as a potential running mate in the much-anticipated general elections in Kenya in 2027.
He is currently serving his second term as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Makadara Constituency in Nairobi County, having been first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022 on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

Aladwa repeatedly stressed his deep roots in the capital, saying he has served Nairobi longer than any other active politician, following his extended local roles in the city.
“I am the longest-serving politician in this city. I have been here from the councilor days, through the MCA era, and now as a Member of Parliament. In 2027, I am vying for governor of Nairobi on an ODM ticket. Mark my words,” Aladwa declared, eliciting loud cheers from the audience he was addressing this afternoon.
Other members eyeing City Hall 2027
The announcement serves to end weeks of speculation about Aladwa’s political future, injecting fresh energy into an already crowded 2027 race for City Hall.
Incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo, and former Public Service CS Moses Kuria have all either declared or strongly hinted at gubernatorial ambitions.
Aladwa has also positioned himself as a staunch Azimio loyalist and a close ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga, with his declaration coming at a time when ODM is keen to reclaim Nairobi, which has been slippery to grab, having lost it to Jubilee’s Mike Sonko in 2017 and to UDA’s Sakaja in 2022.

Political analysts say Aladwa’s entry into the gubernatorial race complicates ODM’s internal primaries, as Babu Owino, a younger, more nationally recognizable figure, is widely seen as the party’s frontrunner.
Some party insiders have also floated the idea of an Aladwa deputy governorship ticket to balance ethnic and generational equations in the cosmopolitan county cum city.
