German diplomat Andreas Peschke has been nominated as the next European Union (EU) Ambassador to Kenya.
Upon completion of the diplomatic procedures, Andreas will officially take up the role of the EU Ambassador to Kenya.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, the Vice President of the European Commission, announced the nomination on June 3 2026.
Andreas previously served as Germany’s Ambassador to Kenya and later as Director-General for European Affairs at the German Federal Foreign Office.
“Kenya, Peschke Andreas has been nominated as the EU Ambassador. He is currently the Ambassador of Germany to South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. He has formerly, among other posts, held the position of Director General for the EU and EU Member States at the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany,” Kaja Kallas announces new EU Ambassador nominations.
Alongside Andreas’s nomination, Kaja Kallas also announced the nomination of 33 EU Ambassadors and 7 Deputy Heads of Delegation to the European Union.

Early Life and Educational Background
Andreas Peschke was born in 1969 in Dresden, Germany. Peschke studied African Studies (Afrikanistik) in Leipzig and Cologne (Köln), Germany, as well as in London, United Kingdom.
In his personal life, Andreas has said he is a family man but keeps his family life private.
During a July 2026 SABC News interview on his five years in South Africa, Andreas explained how he and his wife came to love the country.
Andreas Peschke Diplomatic Career and Achievements
Peschke joined the German Federal Foreign Office in 1996, completing the preparatory training for the higher foreign service at the then Bonn-Ippendorf training center.
His first overseas posting was at the German Embassy in Nigeria, where he served between 1999 and 2002.
He then worked at the German Embassy in Russia from 2002 to 2004 before returning to Berlin to serve in the European Directorate-General of the Federal Foreign Office from 2004 to 2006.
In 2006, Peschke joined the office of then-German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, where he served until 2008.
Later, Andreas was appointed Deputy Spokesperson of the Federal Foreign Office in 2008 before being promoted to Spokesperson of the Federal Foreign Office in 2009.

Peschke then served as Germany’s chief foreign ministry spokesperson from 2009 to 2013. In 2013, he was appointed German Ambassador to Kenya in Nairobi, where he served until 2015.
Following his Kenya assignment, Peschke returned to Berlin and served as Special Envoy for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia from 2015 to 2018.
He later became Director-General for European Affairs and Head of the Europe Department at the German Federal Foreign Office, serving from 2018 to 2021.
Between September and October 2021, Andreas was appointed German Ambassador to South Africa, with concurrent accreditation to Lesotho and Eswatini, a position he held until 2026, before he was nominated as the next EU Ambassador to Kenya.
During his tenure in South Africa, he also gained attention for his fluency in isiZulu, a language he has said he began studying while pursuing African Studies at university.
