Chief justice Martha Koome has called for a crackdown in the Judiciary to fight corruption in the arm of government.
In a statement, Koome stated that she has started a campaign spearheaded by the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) to ensure that the Judicial Service remains corruption-free.
The chief justice issued this directive during a round table with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) held on July 16 at the Trademark hotel.
“The Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commision (JSC), are resolute in our commitment to ensuring that our courts are corruption-free.
We have intensified this effort through the National Council on the Administration Justice (NCAJ), where we are coordinating a sector-wide and nationwide campaign against corruption,” said Koome.

Likewise, she extended her invitation to KEPSA to join the judicial service and be an integral part of the whole societal approach of accountability to reinvigorate and embrace a culture that abhors corruption.
While, citing effects of corruption, the chief Justice stated that it has hindered growth and development in the country.
Further, Koome announced that, major transformations have been pursued in the rollout of small Claims Courts which are geared to resolving commercial disputes in the shortest time possible.
“These courts are designed to hear and determine courts are designed to hear and determine commercial disputes involving values of less than 1million Kenya shillings within 60 days,” said Koome.

The Chief Justice announced that, there were plans to roll out 25 more Small Claims Courts across the country to increase access to justice for all citizens and that the waiver of commercial cases fees not exceeding Kshs 1,000,000 had been effective from 1st April 2020 which later lapsed on 1st April 2022.
