A police officer in Navakholo, Kakamega County gunned down a 22-year-old man, Ian Wanjala during a scuffle after the man chopped off his fingers.
The police officer in the company of his colleagues had responded to a distress call from Walter Wanjala, the brother of the 22-year-old.
According to Walter, his brother was threatening to kill their 68-year-old mother Florence Nasenya with a hoe.
However, when the officers arrived, the man charged at the ward commander Kennedy Odongo, at attacked him with the hoe, cutting off his fingers.
“When he saw the officers he left with a hoe on his hand, a knife and a screwdriver in his pockets and charged towards them,” said Walter.

Police Officer Guns the 22-year-Old
The ward commander fell to the ground after the attack and when Ian took another swing at him, he shot him to stop him from the second attack.
Navakholo Sub County Police Commander Richard Omanga confirmed the incident indicating that the 22-year-old had scared away neighbors and became wild when the officers tried to get him under control.
“Lately, the man had changed. The villagers were scared of him, and they would run away when they saw him,” said Omanga.
The police officer and the man were rushed to Navakholo Sub County Hospital, but the 22-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival.
Detectives from the homicide department have launched investigations into the incident.

Gunmen Shoot at Residents
In a separate incident on February 14, two unidentified individuals in police uniform shot dead civilians and injured other people next to a police station in Ntimaru in Migori County.
Speaking to the media, witnesses said the suspects were in full police uniforms and armed with guns.
“The National Intelligence Service (NIS) should establish how these people came here because they were in full police uniforms and armed with guns. So, people will fear attending to police officers when they come for services
“We are asking the authorities to look into this matter, treat it as an emergency and get deep into it,” said Daniel Wambura, a resident of Ntimaru.
Police Commander Kennedy Osando of Ntimaru announced that investigations are underway to apprehend the suspects involved in the incident.
“We are currently looking into the matter and treating it as a standard robbery, although the details remain unclear. Our commitment is to follow through with the investigation, ensuring the apprehension of the suspects and their subsequent court appearance,” stated Osando.
