The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest and death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo, who died while in police custody at Narumoru Police Station.
In a statement on September 22, the DCI said Osiemo had been arrested in connection with an assault case reported at Narumoru Police Station.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has noted claims circulating on social media concerning the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo while in police custody at Narumoru Police Station. The DCI wishes to place on record the circumstances surrounding his arrest, detention, and subsequent death,” stated the DCI.
The case arose from an incident on July 2, in which Osiemo, who was formerly employed as a farmhand by the complainant, was alleged to have gone to her home, assaulted her, and stabbed her several times before fleeing.
The complainant reported the incident to police and was admitted to Tumutumu Hospital, where she remained for nine days.
DCI Takes Over Assault Case
The agency said the complainant later raised concerns about the handling of the case with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Nanyuki.

The ODPP subsequently directed the DCI to take over the matter.
The case file was forwarded to the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO), Kieni East, on September 3, after which detectives began tracing Osiemo.
According to the DCI, detectives followed his trail to Kisii, where he reportedly went into hiding.
With assistance from the SCCIO, Masaba North, DCI officers from Kieni East arrested Osiemo in Kisii on September 18.
He was initially booked at Keroka Police Station pending collection by officers from Kieni East.
The officers later collected him and booked him at Narumoru Police Station on September 19.
The DCI said Osiemo was processed the same day, had his statement recorded, and was returned to the cells after officers observed him to be in normal condition.
He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday, September 21, in connection with the assault case.
Osiemo Found Hanging in Cell
The agency said Osiemo was found hanging from the ventilation grills inside the police cell on Sunday, September 20.

“On Sunday, 20 September 2026, Osiemo was found hanging from the ventilation grills inside the police cell at Narumoru Police Station,” said the DCI.
The scene was processed immediately in the presence of officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), senior police officers, and one of Osiemo’s relatives.
His body was subsequently moved to the Narumoru mortuary pending an autopsy.
The DCI said the investigation into Osiemo’s death has since been taken over by IPOA.
The agency said it would cooperate fully with the independent investigation as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
The DCI also extended condolences to Osiemo’s family, relatives and friends, urging the public to rely on verified official information as the investigation continues.
