One person died after being ingested in a running aircraft engine at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Wednesday, May 29.
According to the Royal Marechaussee, the national gendarmerie force of Netherlands, a person ended up in the running engine and died while investigation is being carried out.
“This afternoon, a tragic incident occurred on the platform at Schiphol Airport, where a person ended up in a running airplane engine and unfortunately passed away. The Royal Military Police has initiated an investigation,” said the Royal Marechaussee.
In a statement, Schiphol Airport described the incident as horrible and sent gratitude to the relatives of the victim.

Further, the Airport was yet to establish if it was an accident or suicide and they had left the matter to the royal police to conduct the investigation.

“Today, there has been a horrific incident in which a person ended up in an airplane engine. Our thoughts go out to the bereaved families, and we are concerned for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this. The Royal Military police is currently investigating,” said Schiphol Airport.
In compliance with Schiphol’s communications, the plane to Billund, Denmark was scheduled to depart at 2.25 pm minutes before the incident.
Infrastructure minister Mark Harbers later released a statement reporting the incident and sent condolences to the family members.
“Terrible news about a fatal accident today at Schiphol. My condolences go out to the relatives of the victim and the people who witnessed the accident,” Harber said.
Schiphol is one of the biggest airports in the world which handled about 5.5 million passengers last month according to the airport figures.

Last year, in June, a Texas airport worker died after being ingested into an engine at San Antonio International Airport.

While another worker was pulled into a running engine in Alabama in January.
According to the authorities, the incident involved an Embraer 170 aircraft, a medium-range jet which had flown from Dallas Fort Worth to Montgomery Regional Airport.
The victim, whose name was not disclosed, was an employee of Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines that operates at more than 80 airports.
However, the airport declined to give more comments to the media after reporting the incident.
